“I’m not done.” He stormed over to me and grabbed me by the throat. He lifted me in the air and squeezed. “You will also have no memory of the life you’re saving. She will never know of you either.”

“No!” I screamed through the pain.

He dropped me, and I fell to the ground.

“Do you not accept my deal?”

“No. I can’t. Make me another. Make me a vampire like her, save her, and give me the memories.”

“If you want your memories back, you can have them after you collect the souls of one thousand evil men.”

“One thousand?” I scrambled to stand.

“Ten,” he snapped. “Ten thousand! I will save you both, and once I get my souls, you’ll get your memories back.”

“And until then?”

A wicked grin spread onto his face. “You’ll wander the Earth knowing someone is waiting for you, but you’ll know nothing else but your task.”

He held out his hand.

If I didn’t do this, she would die. I’d seen her get shot. I didn’t have much time.

“Do I get to say goodbye? Before you take my memories?”

He considered it. “One day.”

“Deal.” And I shook his hand.
