“Scout, baby.” He cupped my cheek. I stared at the blankets and blinked away my tears. Desi grabbed my chin and forced my head up. His eyes were dark and his face was so serious, it made my heart stop. “You can get rid of all those ideas right now. I don’t care about money, or my family, or whatever you’re worrying about. It’s just you and I until the end. Got it?”

My lips trembled, and he stifled them with a scorching kiss. It turned into another, and the blanket between us shifted and his body was moving against mine again. In the friction of his hips against mine, I found total ecstasy and something else I had never truly felt before.

Love.

I woke up from a nap,to find tarot cards scattered all over the room. It was dark now. I rolled over, and my heart sank when Desi was nowhere to be seen. I slapped the bed and a paper crumpled underneath my hand.

I flicked my bedside lamp on and sat up.

I stayed too late and now I gotta run. I am late for something. I’ll come retrieve my cards later. Thanks.

Desi.

I cried, despite the note not being anything detrimental. I got out of bed, threw on a shirt, and collected the cards. With each card I found, I reminded myself that he was coming back. He had to. He wouldn’t leave his cards behind completely. I reread the note, wondering how true it was. What was he late for? Was he off to kill another guy for someone?

I mindlessly watched Will Smith argue with Carlton while replaying everything that happened today. How could Desi be so… nonchalant? He killed someone. On purpose. That was murder. My boyfriend was a murderer. Eventually, I went into the kitchen to make a bowl of ramen, the only food I could always afford, and the phone caught my eye.

This was the only chance I’d get. If I wanted to confess what I knew and solve that guy’s missing person case, his murder, then I would have to call now.

Could I turn Desi in?
