She hung up and texted him the samemessage.
Then, she stood there and stared at her phoneas she willed it to light up with Kyle’s name on the screen. A fullminute passed, and nothing happened. She called Julian and Aidanext, but neither of them answered. She left them both voice mailsand text messages too.
They’d both gone to look at a place thatmight make a good art gallery for Aida, but she didn’t understandwhynoone was answering their damn phone!
Then, she called Dante, and someone finallyresponded to her.
“What is it, love?” he asked.
“Kyle didn’t show up for work, and he’s notanswering his phone.”
“Have you talked to Julian?”
“No, he’s not picking up either, and neitheris Aida. Can you go over to their place and see if Kyle is there?Aida and Julian were going to look at some real estate, but maybethey’re done and home already.”
“I’m sure they’ll enjoy me barging in ifthat’s true,” he said teasingly.
“They’ll get over it. I’m worried abouthim.”
“I’m sure everything’s fine. Kyle is probablywith Melanie, and they fell asleep or lost track of time.”
“Yeah, maybe,” she muttered.
However, everything didn’tfeelfine. She couldn’t control the knot of panic building in her chest as shewalked to the end of the hall and poked her head out to take in thecrowd filling the bar. It was almost time for her to go on.
“Are you going to sing or stand there?” Rickdemanded when he spotted her.
“I have to go,” she whispered over the phone.“I love you.”
“I love you too, and don’t worry. I’ll checkthe apartment and be there soon.”
Cassidy hung up and slid her phone into herpocket. “I’m going,” she muttered.
She weaved her way through the tables andtoward the stage. She was almost there when her step faltered, andshe stopped. There was no way she could get on stage and sing likenothing was wrong.
Dante might be right about Kyle losing trackof time, but she didn’t think so. Kyle had found his mate, but ithad been a couple of weeks, and in all that time, he’d never beenlate for work.
She remained frozen as she stared at thestage, and then her phone vibrated in her pocket. She fumbled toget it out as hope pulsed through her, but when she saw Julian’sname, that hope died.
“What’s up?” he asked after she answered.
“Kyle didn’t show up for work.”
“He’s probably just running late.”
“He’s not answering his phone.”
Julian was silent for a few seconds before hereplied. “He’s probably distracted.”
“He’s never done this before.”
“He’s never found his mate beforeeither.”
“Something’s not right.”
“Is your twin intuition speaking?”
“I don’t know what it is, but I knowsomething’s wrong. When was last time you saw him?”
