“I think it’s more for the hunters and that the demons are relying on other hunters and the Alliance to keep its effects contained, but they’re also counting on it slowly decimating us. We’ll have to make sure we don’t get stabbed with a needle whenever we fight now, so we’ll be more cautious and less likely to go out.

“They know we don’t take our own and toss them aside like they would. We’ll do everything possible to save them, which will eat up resources and keep us from hunting as often as we normally would. The demons created the vampire and hunter lines, and now they’re trying to create a way to destroy us.”

Chapter Forty-Four

“Haveyou told Ronan your thoughts on this?” Asher asked.

“I told Declan,” Logan said. “He’ll pass it on to Ronan.”

“What are we going to do?” Juan asked.

He rubbed his palms across the stubble lining his jaw. Juan was always perfectly groomed when Logan first arrived here, but now he had shadows under his eyes, his hair stood on end, and his five-o’clock shadow was leaning more toward ten o’clock.

“You can’t kill them, but keeping them alive is risky,” Juan continued.

“There’s a chance they could return to their old selves,” Asher said. “They’re more monster than human now, but we have no idea if this is a permanent state or not.”

“What will happen if they don’t feed?” Juan asked.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” Dr. Espinosa said. “I’m not sure if vampires starve to death or just waste away.”

When they all looked at him, Logan pondered it before replying. “Vampires need blood to complete the transition when they first turn, or they get caught in between vampire and man and become monsters, but they’re not vampires. I have no idea what’s going to happen to them.”

“Are they like this because they haven’t fed?” another hunter asked.

“I don’t think so,” Logan said. “But we’ve never seen anything like this before.”

“Should we give them blood?” another asked.

“It could make them stronger,” Logan said.

“So then no,” the hunter muttered.

“I guess we’re going to find out what happens if they don’t feed,” someone else said.

A part of Logan wished they would destroy them, but he understood why they were still alive. They all needed to find out what would happen and if they could save them, but these things were a menace to Elena and everyone else here.

However, if there was any chance they could somehow save Leonardo and Diego, they had to take it. Learning more about these two might save countless lives in the future.

Still, he hated being anywhere near these two.

“When was the last time you tranquilized them?” Logan asked.

“About a half an hour ago,” Dr. Espinosa answered. “They’ll be good for another couple of hours, which means I’m going home to catch a couple of hours of sleep. If anything happens, wake me.”

“Sure thing, Doc,” Asher said.

Logan settled into one of the chairs to take over the doctor’s watch.

The sun was startingto rise as Logan and Asher made their way back toward their house. When Logan’s phone started ringing, he pulled it out and spotted Ronan’s new number on the screen.

“This can’t be good,” he murmured.

He was on good terms with the king of the vampires, but it was usually Nathan or Declan who called him.

“Hello,” he said.
