“When do you think you can get back here?” Ronan asked.

Logan wasn’t put off by his lack of a greeting, but the abruptness of Ronan’s tone caused him to stop walking. Asher halted beside him.

“What happened?” Logan asked.

“We have a hunter who was injected.”

Logan’s heart plunged into his gut. It was bad enough witnessing what was happening here; these hunters had become like his family. But the hunters back home were his family.

“Who?” Logan asked.

“Josiah.”

Logan’s hands clenched on the phone. Josiah was older than him and a really good hunter; he could not have survived this long only to be taken down by these bastards.

“Shit,” he hissed.

“We have him locked up, but we need all the help we can get back here. I realize Juan won’t be able to send anyone, but you and Asher have to return.”

“We’ll find a flight and call you back.”

Ronan hung up, and Logan stood there staring at his phone. He had no idea what to do. Elena wouldn’t want to leave her mother and friends behind, but he couldn’t stay. He had to help the Alliance; if they fell, the whole world would go with them.

“What happened?” Asher asked.

“Josiah has been injected.”

“Fuck,” Asher said.

“Can you call and find out about flights? I have to talk to Elena.”

“What are you going to do? You can’t leave her behind.”

“I may not have a choice.”

“If you leave her here, you’ll be as much of a danger to us as Leonardo, Diego, and Josiah. You can’t do it, Logan. If she stays, then you’re going to have to stay with her.”

“I can’t do that. We have to stop whatever is going on, or we’ll lose everything.”

“I’m not getting on a plane with you and a hundred other innocents if you leave your mate behind. Ronan and the others will understand if you can’t return because of your mate.”

“Maybe they will, but I won’t. Call about the flights.”

“I’m not kidding, Logan.”

“Then call about your flight. I’ll make my own arrangements,” he retorted before stalking away.

Chapter Forty-Five

When he arrivedat Elena’s house, it was still so early all the lights were off. He circled to her bedroom and tapped on the screen. He waited a few seconds before popping the screen out of the window to knock on the glass.

He didn’t know if he’d done it loud enough to wake her, but her face appeared a few seconds later. For a second, he couldn’t breathe as her beauty and the dark hair tumbling around her shoulders robbed him of the ability. She was his mate, he loved her, and he might have to leave her behind.

His nails dug into his palms at the possibility. He didn’t know how to get on a plane and fly home without her, but he would do whatever was necessary to keep her safe. And defeating these assholes was the only way to do that.

She unlocked the window and pushed it open. “Is everything okay?”

“I have to talk to you.”
