When the demons and Savages injected others, they succeeded in making them useless for the Alliance while also turning them into weapons against the Alliance. But they didn’t want those killing machines running free and wreaking havoc on the human world.

Maybe the demons would set them free one day, but it didn’t seem they were ready for the humans to know of their existence. He had no doubt they would make their presence known one day, as they were hell-bent on destroying everything they touched.

For now, the injected were a good weapon against the Alliance. They also created a distraction that took away from the Alliance’s goal of destroying the Savages and demons. It was difficult to concentrate on them when their loved ones were suffering a fate worse than death.

But no matter how hideous Elena’s existence had become, Asher was extremely glad she was still alive. Without her, Logan would either be dead or a monster, and he couldn’t lose his best friend. He would do everything he could to prevent that.

CHAPTERELEVEN

“If you havesome way of destroying the demons or know what they’re up to, I’m here to help,” Asher said to Brie. “Ineedto help.”

She lifted her head from the notebook she’d been staring at. She held a pen between her teeth; she chewed on it while studying him. The tip of it flicked up and down in the air.

“I know you’re not the enemy,” she said. “But I also can’t have you getting in my way. This has to come to an end.”

“You’ll never hear me disagree about that. Do you also know what they’re doing with the serum and the syringes?”

Brie’s eyebrows drew together as she pulled the pen from her mouth and clipped it onto the open notebook. “What are you talking about?”

“The demons and Savages are injecting hunters and vampires with a serum that turns them into monsters.”

“That’s impossible.”

“No, it’s not. I’ve seen it happen. They injected my best friend’s mate, and it’s destroying her. Before they injected her, Elena was kind, strong, and a fighter; she’s a hunter turned vampire. Now, she’s locked in a cell and ready to murder anyone who gets in her way. I watched her fall in love with my best friend, and now she would tear out his throat if her cage was ever opened.”

The color drained from Brie’s face while he spoke. Her hands clenched as she chewed on her bottom lip and looked anxiously toward the doorway. When he followed her gaze, he spotted Cabo leaning into the middle, watching them. The man’s piercing, brown eyes held Asher’s.

“Are you shitting me?” Cabo asked.

“No, I’m not,” Asher said. “Elena has been like that for a month, but I saw other hunters in Arizona who were also turned into what most would call a monster. We call them the injected and believe the serum is demon blood.”

“My God,” Brie whispered.

“I don’t think God has anything to do with this,” Asher said honestly.

“I suppose you’re right,” Brie replied.

“What have you done to help them?” Cabo asked.

“Everything,” Asher replied. “We’ve tried everything. We put them on dialysis, we starved them, we fed them, we started injecting them with our blood to see if it might dilute the demon’s blood, we’ve kept them locked away in the hopes the bad blood would fade with time, but it’s been over a month for some of them, and nothing has changed.”

“How awful,” Brie said.

Asher pinned her with his stare once more. He admired her determination to bring down the demons, but he wouldn’t let her stand in his way of saving Logan and Elena.

“If you know something that could help Logan and Elena, tell me. They’re suffering, and if Elena dies, I’ll lose my best friend,” he told her. “Do you know about mates?”

“I do.”

“Then you know what they’re both going through and how much Logan is suffering.”

Brie recalled her parents’ love for each other and their tragic ending. She knew exactly how much his friend was suffering. “I do.”

The raw anguish and desperation in his voice made her wince. His love for Elena and Logan was evident in his burning eyes. But what would happen if Asher somehow ruined everything for them?

“Maybe if we work together, it will speed things up, or I can help you succeed,” Asher said.

Brie stared at the pages of notes before her. Most of it was from the visions she received, but some were maps, names, and places she’d seen and sketched over the years. This was one of many notebooks.
