“I mean it, though. Thank you for letting me sit in. I feel like I know you a little better now.”

“Even though it’s not a pretty version?” There was uncertainty in her voice.

“Yeah. I…I like sharing things with you. I look forward to learning more.” And she really meant that.

“Good. Yeah, great. I do too.”

“Miss Reese, am I meeting with you next?” Blain yelled down the stairs.

Reese rolled her eyes. “Yes, Blain. Go sit in my office,” she called out before turning her attention back to Matty. “Well, I’ve been summoned.”

Matty let out a laugh. “Sounds like it. I need to get back too. I’ll walk you up?”

“Sure.”

The men had moved out of the halls, instead going outside to have a smoke break. Matty walked her to her office door, where both stood awkwardly for a moment before Matty spoke. “Okay, well, I’ll see you later.”

“Yeah, see you.”

She watched Matty walk down the short steps to the main door and walk out. She was just stepping into her own office when Matty called out. She had come back in. “Reese?”

She found Matty at the bottom of the stairs, her face bright red. “Um, would you, would you like to go with me to Kerrie and Bette’s engagement party this Saturday? Like, the two of us going together?”

Reese’s heart leapt in her chest. “I’d love to.”

Matty’s rigid posture relaxed. “Awesome. I’ll text you the time.”

“That sounds good.”

With a flash of a grin, she watched her leave again.

She walked into her office with a matching grin and a little pep in her step.

“Get it, Ms. Reese,” Blain whooped. She had forgotten all about him.

She rolled her eyes. “You didn’t hear that.”

“Secret’s safe with me.”

She just shook her head.

Saturday came quicker than Reese had expected, considering she had spent the whole week waiting for it to arrive.

She glanced down at her phone to see Matty’s reply to her question regarding how dressy the event would be tonight. They had been texting every day. Nothing very deep, but the usual chitchat that was involved when getting to know each other. Butterflies had permanently taken up residence in her belly.

Matty:Okay, I asked Kerrie and she said dress nice.

Reese frowned.

Reese:…nice?

Matty:Yes

Reese:Is there any woman nearby who has on mascara or knows what contouring is?
