“Why?”

“You haven’t spoken to your mom? The divorce is about to be finalized.”

Chloe hadn’t spoken to her mom in a few days, which was unusual, but Chloe had been enjoying the respite. She adored her mother, but it took so much energy to keep up with the turmoil. “Oh. I didn’t know.”

“So that bit of conflict between us will be officially put, well, to bed.” Parker laughed at his own joke.

Chloe doubted it could be that simple. “If you say so.”

“I’ll pick you up at your place on Wednesday morning. We can be in Miami by lunchtime. Where do you live?”

“I’m in Chelsea. 23rd St. A block off the Hudson. I can text you the address.”

“Are you serious? I’m in Hudson Yards. The big tower. 72nd floor. We’re practically neighbors.”

Chloe could not believe her luck. Like she needed any more closeness with Parker Sullivan. “It’s a huge city. I don’t think we’re really that close.”

He shrugged. “Eleven blocks is nothing.”

“If you say so.”Not nearly enough, that’s for sure.

Parker got up from his seat and grabbed his suit coat, slinging it over his shoulder. “Thanks for dinner. It was nice.”

Chloe stood and walked him to the door. “Of course. Thanks for meeting with me. Thanks for trusting me with your client.”

He took another look at her and she felt that connection again, the one that told her she shouldn’t be involved with Parker. There was something about him that was too tempting. Perhaps it was because he was essentially forbidden fruit. “You know, Chloe, I’m sorry we didn’t get to know each other when our parents were married. But something tells me this is better.”

“Why’s that?”

He shrugged and patted her on the shoulder. “We didn’t get invested in their drama. I hate it.”

“Me too.”

“It’s exhausting. I’m just praying this was the last time down the aisle for my dad.”

“It’s beyond pointless, isn’t it?”

He grinned. “Save yourself the heartache and just have fun. That’s a far better way to go.”
