AJ coughed. “Dude, she hasn’t told you anything?”
I shook my head. “If she did, I wouldn’t be sitting here with my ass in my hand, looking to you two for answers.”
“Then Sage probably shouldn’t tell you either.” He gave his woman a look and I wanted to punch him.
“Bro, believe me, she can tell me now that the seed has been planted.”
Sage bit down on her lip, guilt carving a line between her eyebrows. “She’s going to kill me.”
I shot up from the stool, hating that I had to stand there, ready to beg for information that probably should have come from my woman’s mouth in the first place. “I won’t tell her you told me.”
Sage looked to her man for approval, and he gave her a nod.
“Well, Macy had interviewed with a few big-named magazines, still hoping one would offer her something in New York.”
Jaw ticking, I leaned against the stool, urging her to go on.
“Apparently,Cosmopolitangot back to her weeks before graduation, offering her an entry-level position as an assistant to their social media director. I think she only has about two weeks left to accept or decline their offer.”
It was awesome news, especially sinceCosmopolitanhad an office in Manhattan.
Sage rubbed her growing belly. “As you can imagine, it’s a dream job for someone who’s lived for a career in journalism. I know for a fact, Macy was heartbroken over theHot Shotmishap, andCosmo’soffer was the glue to mend it.”
Arms folded over my chest, I shrugged, unsure of why she seemed to be hesitating. “Okay, so she accepts the offer and starts working forCosmo. What’s the big deal?”
Sage cleared her throat and quietly said, “Lucas, the job is in London.”
Thanks to high school Geography, I knew there were three US cities named London. “Okay, so LondonOhio, Arkansas, or Kentucky?” Hope bloomed wide in my chest, because if it were any of those three cities, fuck it, we could make the distance between us work.
Sage shook her head, gaze flicking to her man, then right back to me. “London, England.”
Grabbing my keys, I trekked toward the front door. Head on fire. Mission: Unknown.
AJ called after me. “Hey, what about our workout?”
“Not today, dude,” I grumbled over my shoulder. “I’ve got shit to figure out.”

They say the honeymoon phase doesn’t last forever.
Ours lasted so long, I thought for sure we were the power couple to prove that ill-fated theory wrong. We were sailing along on our little love boat, free of choppy waves, hurricanes, and catastrophic icebergs.
Until we weren’t.
About one week before Lucas had to report for training camp, something seemed to change.
He barreled in the house, drunk out of his mind one night.
“Lucas, are youdrunk?”
He swayed on his feet. “Didn’t know I was shacking up with Captain Obvious.”
He became short with me, making it rain one- or two-worded replies aplenty…
“Want to go out for pizza, tonight?”
“No.”
