“Fine, how about dumb a—”

“Okay, stop.” He interrupted me. “You’re spoiling for an excuse to be mean and if you go there, I’ll never tell you my first name. Ever. Your choice.”

I considered his words for a moment and decided that I would rather know his name than spew out negativity even though it was second nature to me.

“Alright. I’ll be nice... Damien.” I shot a quick glance at him with my eyes wide, hoping that I guessed right. He was holding back a smile. “Damon?”

“Nice try.”

“Can you at least tell me how many letters it has?”

“Nope.”

“A hint?”

“Not a chance.”

I racked my brain for more names, but no

ne came to mind. What if it was something foreign that I would never guess in a million years? Defeated, I decided to give up for now. I looked out the window and noticed we were in what looked like a more secluded part of the island.

“Fox, where are we going?”

“To my place.”

“Why?”

“Because I can’t take you to your place.”

“Why not?”

“Because the MacAlistars checked in this afternoon for their week at the timeshare.”

Crap.

Chapter Seven

I didn’t know how to respond, and I didn’t know I would be that embarrassed to have been caught in a lie.

“Well, it used to be my Gram’s house,” I said meekly.

“You mean Georgia Wyatt is your grandmother?”

“Was my grandmother,” I corrected.

“Oh, sorry,” Fox replied apologetically. “I didn’t know. I do remember her, though. She was a real nice lady.”

“Yeah,” I whispered, feeling full of sorrow.

We continued to drive in silence as unexpected thoughts of Gram flooded my drunken mind. A little bit of alcohol can put me in a fun and playful mood but too much can turn me into an emotional blubbering mess. I felt a tear run down my cheek and I quickly swiped it away.

Fox made a left turn at the end of the road and pulled up to a small one-story house.

“This is it,” he said as he opened the driver’s side door.

“What happens now?” I asked after I managed to get myself out of the car and keep my balance while leaning against the car. When he stared at me with confusion I continued. “You know I don’t have a place to go so you decided to bring me here. Why?”

“Stop thinking so much. Let’s just focus on right now and the fact that you are holding onto the hood of my car to keep yourself upright.”
