I pick up a pen and tick the box next to “I will not be attending,” slide the RSVP into the return envelope, and put it into my bag.
I’ll post it tomorrow.

Dear Sophie,
Hope you’re well. We met when you came with Clare Walsh for her cake tasting recently and you very kindly gave me your details, as well as Clare’s.
I’m sorry to bother you, but I wanted to run something past you as one of Clare’s bridesmaids and most trusted friends. Clare’s fiancé, Dominic, called and left a message, asking me to change the wedding cake as a big surprise for Clare on the day.
As you may recall, Clare ordered a three-tiered ivory fondant-iced cake with climbing sugar flowers up each tier.
Dominic has requested that we change the order and produce a wedding cake in the shape of a camel. Heinformed me that he proposed after a camel ride on a holiday in Marrakech.
I’m not sure how to proceed in this circumstance. The last thing I would like is for the bride to be upset on her wedding day because, when the cake is revealed, it is not in fact the classic ivory design she ordered, but instead a camel.
I would hate to ruin the surprise but I’m a little uncomfortable to go ahead with such a drastic change without permission from the bride.
I thought I would ask your thoughts on the matter before contacting Dominic.
Should I go ahead and make the camel? Do let me know your thoughts.
Best wishes,
Carla

Hi Sophie,
Lovely to speak to you this morning, thanks for giving me a call.
I have just got off the phone with Dominic and, as you advised, I suggested that we stick to the cake Clare ordered for the wedding day, as it’s her dream cake, BUT in addition I could still create a surprise camel cake for the bridal party dinner the night before.
Just like you suggested, I carefully explained that the camel was a thoughtful, wonderful surprise but we wouldn’t want to risk causing Clare a pang of disappointment if she didn’t get the wedding cake she’d imagined.
He began to agree with me and by the end of the call, I think he thought it was all his idea in the first place!
I’m thrilled to now be making two cakes for the happycouple—a camel cakeanda traditional three-tiered. Thank you for all your help. And don’t worry, as promised, I didn’t mention you at all.
Out of interest, do you know if the camel Clare rode had one hump or two?
Best wishes,
Carla
