Nia and I exchanged a look. Nora never talked about herself. Never.
“What happened?” I asked.
Nora got a faraway look in her big blue eyes.“I’ll tell y’all sometime at home,” she said, and I knew we’d probably never hear the story.
“Who the hell would cheat onyou?” Nia asked, aghast.
No kidding. Nora was gorgeous, with the most beautiful hair I’d ever seen. It was full and wavy and went all the way down her back. She also had generous lips, creamy skin, legs that went on forever, a nice ass, and a great rack. She looked like a model, not a bartender. I knew why Nico oftenborrowed her to tend bar in Cayenne.
Not that Nora ever did anything with the men in the sex club. Or if she did, she wouldn’t tell us.
“Get back out there, ladies,” Glory came up behind us.“They’re getting restless and I don’t have enough tits and ass to go aroundallthe tables.”
I grinned at her, grabbed my tray, and headed back out. I studied other options for the auction. I had a lot of regulars who came in to see me. But Thad was about the only one I was attracted to.
Besides Paolo, of course. God. I wish Iwasn’tattracted to him. I glanced over. Tonight, he was sitting by himself at one of the premier tables. He had taken off his suit jacket and his tie, unbuttoned a couple of buttons at the neck of his shirt, and rolled up his sleeves. His dark hair was styled perfectly, as always, and he’d left a five o’clock shadow on his normally clean-shaven face. It only emphasized that razor-sharp jawline of his.
Too late, I noticed that his silvery gray eyes were on me, watching me check him out. I pretended not to care and went to one more table before his. The men there were very handsy, and I wondered if they’d seen what I did with Thad, who was staring at me with pure desire in his eyes. I just smiled as hands caressed my ass and brushed against my tits. It was business as usual.
When I made it over to Paolo again, I was getting tired. I’d been working all day. I’d gotten up at five to make it to the hospital by six for early surgery check-ins. I always got off at four because of my early start, but I could still feel it all catching up with me. Two full-time jobs and going to school? It was fucking hard.
Paolo must’ve seen the look on my face, though I tried to smile through a yawn as I plopped his glass of whiskey in front of him.
“Sit with me.”
It wasn’t a request. I met his eyes, unsure of what to do. I could sit down with him. I’d seen lots of hostesses do that, especially as things slowed down. And I was pretty damn exhausted. I pulled out the chair across from him and sat down.
He watched me, unsmiling. His eyes roamed over me, and I felt his stare like a touch. He took in every detail, lingering on my mouth and breasts. Silently, he picked up his glass to drink his whiskey casually. He usually didn’t order so many, and I wondered if he had a driver to take him to his penthouse.
“You’re usually gone by now, aren’t you?” I asked it only to break the silence. I was growing uncomfortable.
“Yes,” he admitted.
“Are you waiting on Abbi to dance?” Madeline had already done her sets for the night. She was who most people stayed around for, though Abbi had a large number of fans, too. Their style was just completely different. Both were sexy, but Abbi was more subtle about it.
There was nothing subtle about Madeline.
“No. I’m not here for the dancers.”
My eyes shot to his. Was he admitting he only came here for me? Everyone thought it and talked about it, but he’d never verified it.
“Maybe I have a hard time when men hang around you at work because I know what’s under your scrubs. Maybe I picture their hands on you, and it makes me crazy. Maybe,” he leaned in,“I want you so bad I can hardly stand it. Maybe I want to beat up any man who talks to you, who looks at you, like I’m some kind of modern-day caveman.”
My lips had parted as I stared at him.
“Let me have you. Please.” His eyes, usually such a light tone, were dark and heated as he stared at me. His hand was clutched so tightly around his glass that I could see that his fingertips had turned white.
“I… I can’t. You know that,” I whispered, looking around.
“You gavehimsome of you.” He nodded his head in Thad’s direction.
“That’s… for a reason,” I whispered.
“What reason?”
I closed my eyes. I didn’t want to tell him. It was mainly because I was embarrassed, but I also didn’t want to hear him talk about how he was only interested in being with the women from high society. At least in public.
“Look at me.”
