“Okay. Give me a second.” I took a deep breath, then opened my office door. The hallway was clear. That was a good sign. If someone had thought I was murdering someone in my office, they would’ve totally been more proactive. I crept down the hallway, peeked my head around the corner, and stared out into the office lobby area. It was empty.

Whew. I turned to go back down the hall and give Jelly the good news.

“Having a little fun back there, huh, doc?”

I jumped. Creepy Dale, one of the night security guards, was standing in the hallway on the other side of the reception desk and waggling his eyebrows at me.

“It wasn’t fun, Dale. It was a surgical procedure.”

His eyes widened. “Didn’t know you did those in your office.”

“Of course. But only when absolutely necessary. Ms. Pinkoe had a splinter that was deeply buried. I had to extract it. She… screamed, unfortunately. I only hope it didn’t scare anyone out here.”

“Nah. The only one out here is me. I’m disappointed. I thought you were getting a little something something back there, if you know what I mean.” He gave me his signature creepy smile.

“I do know what you mean, and I’m offended at the implication.”

The smiled dropped off his face. “Sorry.”

I nodded, doing my best to look offended. “I’m about tocarry Ms. Pinkoe out, and I’d appreciate it if you don’t make any of your lewd suggestions in front of her.”

“Yes, sir.” He looked subdued. Still disappointed, but subdued.

I hurried back to my office and told Jelly what was going on.

“Ew! Creepy Dale? Really? Why did he have to hear of all people?”

“Would you rather it had been Sister Mary Margaret?” I asked, referring to the sweet nun who came three times a week to sit with any family members of patients who chose to sit in the church chapel. She prayed with them, talked with them, held their hands—she was truly an angel on earth.

And not someone I wanted to hear me having sex.

Jelly cringed. “No. That would be worse.”

“So, here’s what we’re going to do. You have just had a splinter removed from the bottom of your right foot. I’ll carry you.”

She laughed.

“What?”

“Nothing. It’s just you acted like it was this whole big plan. But really it’s just that you’re going to carry me, and we got our story straight.”

I grinned a little sheepishly. “Well, yeah. I guess it wasn’t as big a deal as I was thinking it would be.”

“I’ve never had sex in an office before,” she giggled. “That was awesome.”

“Same,” I said, picking her up and carrying her in my arms bride-style.

“Wait.”

I stopped walking and stared at her.

“That was your first time, too?”

“Yeah.”

She got a huge smile on her face. “I didn’t think there would be something that we would both be virgins at.”

“It’s kindof nice, huh?”
