‘What do you mean? I just texted you our new address.’ She gritted her teeth. ‘I should have got around to it sooner, sorry. It just slipped my mind.’
‘Yeah, I bet. You didn’t forget to tell your friends at the pub about your windfall, though, did you?’
‘What?’
‘I happened to be at the Lettuce Inn the other day and they said you didn’t work there any more. That you’d come into some money, packed in your job and moved to Kerry.’
Lou froze. So that was it. He thought she’d inherited money, and he wanted a piece of it. She might have known. ‘Not money. A house.’
‘Well, same thing in the end, isn’t it?’
‘Not really. It’s our home now. Mine and Jack’s.’
‘Yeah, well, I don’t think you have the right to bring my son to live in a different county without telling me. And I’m not sure I like the idea of Jack growing up a culchie.’
‘Well, you’re not his legal guardian, so suck it. You have no say in where he lives.’
Rob chuckled softly. ‘Ah, Lou. Haven’t lost any of your charm, I see.’ He sighed. ‘I miss our spats sometimes, don’t you?’
‘Nope. Not even a little bit.’
‘And the making up.’ His tone was soft, seductive.
‘Miss that even less.’ He was working Lou’s last nerve. This call was going nowhere and she was running out of patience. ‘Look, you have our address now if you want to see Jack. You probably won’t recognise him, but I can have him hold a rolled-up copy of the newspaper or carry a rose or something.’
‘You think you’re so bloody funny,’ he said, finally dropping the act, a snarl in his voice.
‘Yeah. Bye, Rob. Let me know if you’re coming so I can roll out the red carpet. I won’t hold my breath.’
She ended the call before he could say anything else and flopped back against the sofa, breathing heavily, her face aflame with fury. She took a sip of wine, trying to calm herself down. Then she turned up the volume on the TV again and looked through the on-screen menu, happy to see thatDie Hardwas just starting. Perfect – that was just what she was in the mood for. She sat back and tried to focus on John McClane wreaking havoc on anyone who stood in his way.
