We stand there for a moment in the silence of Knox's study, just looking at each other.
Rowan breaks the silence first. "There were photos online of you leaving the hospital with him. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine."
"Are you together?" Rowan asks, his voice tight. "Is that what this is?"
I pause. My heart is pounding but I know what I need to say.
"Yes," I answer.
Rowan's face hardens.
"It's a fling, Winter. He's using you to get back at me."
"It's not a fling," I say firmly. "And this isn't about you."
I pause, then continue.
"I don't love you anymore, Rowan.
I pause before I continue, “I'm with Knox."
Rowan's expression cracks for just a moment before the anger returns.
"For how long? Until he gets bored?"
The words sting but I don't let them land. Instead, I say the one thing I know will end this conversation forever.
"I'm pregnant."
Rowan stops cold. His entire body goes still. His mouth opens but no sound comes out.
"What?" he finally manages.
"I'm pregnant," I repeat.
Rowan stares at me like he didn't hear me correctly. His eyes are wide with disbelief.
"What?" he says again, softer this time, like his brain is trying to catch up with what I just said.
I look him directly in the eyes and say it one more time, slowly and clearly.
"I'm pregnant. It's Knox's baby."
For a moment, Rowan doesn't move. He just stands there frozen, processing the words.
Then his face changes. Shock gives way to something darker. Something angrier.Rage.His jaw tightens. His hands ball into fists at his sides. His eyes are wild and burning with fury. He turns sharply on his heel and strides to the door. He swings it open with force, the door slamming against the wall, and storms out into the hallway, heading straight for the living room.
Straight for Knox...
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Knox
I'm standing in the living room when I hear the study door slam open. Footsteps pound down the hallway. Then Rowan storms into view, his face twisted with rage. He's coming straight at me.
"You got her pregnant?" Rowan shouts.
