‘Cause he’s a devil when he’s lying under me
My gorgeous, perfect tease
Skyler gasps, pretending to be scandalized. But he’s actually floored at how easily Trevor added to his song, how willing he is to accept it and make it work. Trevor’s eyes are sparking playfully as he shrugs.
“That’s about me though,” Skyler says, recovering. “It’s supposed to be about you. I can’t sing about myself.”
“Sure, you can,” Trevor tells him. “Maybe it could be about meandit could be about you. About us.” He hands back the guitar. “I could never sing something like that, but you could sing it for us both.”
Skyler loves that. That this song that already feels so important to him could be both of theirs. They’ve written tons of songs together before, and Trevor’s helped on other ones for this album already, but this would be different. He loves the idea that he could sing the words Trevor wants to sing himself but can’t, whatever his reasons.
They mess around with it some more, exchanging lyrics like kisses, and Skyler’s not even aware of how much time has passed before they have a finished song.
It’s an amazing feeling, collaborating on music with Trevor like the old days. And the song is everything he wanted it to be, but…
“Is it too much?” he asks, after playing it through for the third time. He knows Trevor will understand what he means.
Trevor frowns, taking a while to answer. “There’s only one way to find out, isn’t there?”
And while Skyler maybe wanted a little more reassurance, he supposes that’s good enough.
TREVOR
Trevor’s been using allthe time Skyler’s at the recording studio to mess around with his own music. He’s written down bits and pieces of songs, but nothing solid. Whenever he tries, he keeps thinking of all the great artists out there whose music falls through the cracks because they don’t fit neatly into one genre, and therefore can’t get the recognition and radio play they need, not to mention the support of a major label.
He knows that, despite everything, he’s incredibly lucky. Because if he wants to make another album, he probably can. Even though his first one didn’t do as well as his label had expected, it still did better than half the music that’s out there. His name recognition alone should be enough to get him signed with another label. Especially with the attention Skyler inadvertently brought back on him.
And he started one song the other day that he might like to record. There’s a whole other side of him that the world didn’t get to see with his first album, which he wrote mostly in a state of depression. Everything isn’t suddenly perfect now, but he’s in a very different place than he was five years ago.
For a long time, he held on to the belief that love would only destroy a person. Now he’s starting to realize that it can save people too.
Sitting on the couch now while Skyler’s out, Trevor starts to play, determined to finish the song. Skyler’s made it clear that he’s free to use Skyler’s big fancy music room whenever he’d like. But he doesn’t need it. All he needs is his guitar. And his inspiration.
Lavender nails and rosy cheeks
Darling, don’t you know you’re everything I need
Everything I ever wanted to be
All the fame and the money
They don’t mean anything without you next to me
I know we’ve been through it all
A tidal wave of love and hurt and life
But I need you to know
That I’d do it all over
Do it all all over
I’d do it all over again for you
He missed the feeling of writing a song purely for Skyler, with the intention of actually playing it for him. The nervous excitement of it. The gratification he used to get watching Skyler’s reactions to hearing something for the first time.
So when Skyler comes home and finds him, and asks to hear what he’s working on, Trevor doesn’t shy away from it like he’s been doing. Opening himself up for Skyler with his music used to be so easy, and he’s ready to do that again.
