But I’m not finished.
“And Marnie?” Brett asks, his voice hollow.
I hesitate.
Jake’s breath is shaky when he finally speaks. “She followed us that night.”
Brett’s face twists. “That motherfucker.”
The world stands still.
The only sound is the crash of waves, the call of distant gulls.
Brett staggers back a step as if he’s been punched.
Sebastian exhales sharply. “Jesus Christ.”
Alex shakes his head. “No,” he murmurs. “Tell me you’re lying.”
Jake doesn’t.
He just stands there, silent. Unmoving.
And I know, in this moment, that nothing will ever be the same again.
EPISODE 200
HELLO IT’S ME
Misty
It’s Jake.
He’s alive.
And he’s here.
Alex took off with Sebastian so quickly, and I just stood here.
I stood here.
Jake.
Sebastian can only mean Jake my half-brother.
He was just a good guy, Brett told me.I know that sounds lame, but there’s no better way to describe him. He always did what was right. Or he tried to, anyway. And he loved fiercely. He was protective of his single mom, and of his girlfriend.
Brett claimed not to remember much more because it was so long ago, but his pained expression last night said more than words ever could.
Brett remembers.
And so do Sebastian and Alex, given how quickly they hightailed it away.
I’m left standing with Ariel.
They just left me.
Have they forgotten that he’s my brother?
