He knew something was up with him from the way he eyed him and Inari that day.
“Me and Coast saw him tonight, too,” Mozzi revealed, and that got Kong’s attention. “At Comfort Kitchen.”
“Nigga got some balls to still be hanging around here.” Moose stepped forward and picked up some of the other paperwork.
Kong’s mind spiraled. He didn’t know what to think. His instincts screamed that there was more to the story, and he wanted to know. Mira was the key, but with her in the wind, they might as well have been in the blind. She wasn’t stupid, and she covered her trail like a pro. All these months they’d been waiting on a slip up.
“What we know about this nigga?” Kong tapped his finger against his upper lip and studied the photo.
He wanted to have his face memorized.
“Brother to Leron Stokes, boyfriend to Chantel Battle. She is the sister of Ottie Jacobs. Ayla and Inari’s mother. Leron isdead. Chantel been MIA for years, but Justin has been in contact with Mira for years. She put him on to job opportunities, and recently, he received a large sum of money to a bank account he set up for himself. Ten thousand three separate times over the last six months,” Mozzi expressed.
Silence filled the room. Kong’s mind swirled, each direction leading back to what happened to Ayla and that fucking medical examiner’s office. Something about that whole situation was nagging at him. Dr. Vines was too smooth, too fucking confident. He couldn’t shake his vibe. Even with all his credentials, there was something off about that motherfucker.
“Do me another favor.” Kong leaned forward and peered up at Mozzi. “Look into the ME. Dr. Paul Vines. I want to know everything about him too. Who he knows. That muhfucka went to Stanford. I want to know how he paid for it.”
“What you thinking?” Moose glanced Kong’s way.
“I don’t know. This whole shit seems off. Even the accident and the explosion. Maybe… maybe she’s not really gone.” Kong stood abruptly.
Both Mozzi and Moose paused, eyeing each other across the desk while Kong moved away from it.
“You really think so? I mean, Inari saw the explosion, and Ayla was definitely in that car,” Moose reminded him.
“I know that, nigga. I ain’t fucking crazy either,” Kong snapped, noticing how they both were watching him like a mental patient. “I’m the last to think some shit like this could happen. I’ve already lost too much. You know how many times I wished Jane and Twyla was still here? With Ayla, shit never felt final. We was supposed to talk that night. She was mad at me about the whole Nay shit, and I knew I couldn’t keep doing that shit to her. So, I decided we would sit down and figure this out. Then, she was just gone. That body in the morgue, that wasn’t her.”
“If she is out there, it could explain why we haven’t found Mira. We know the type of business she runs. Ayla is a perfect candidate for her operation,” Moose reasoned.
“So is a baby,” Mozzi chimed in. “You know how much muhfuckas out here paying for babies on the black market?” He whistled, and Kong’s jaw tightened.
His fist balled at his side, and Mozzi continued to click away on the computer until he came across everything he could on the medical examiner. Frowning, he calculated a few things that seemed off before taking a break and reclining in the leather desk chair.
“You got something?” Kong stepped closer.
“Yeah. He had a partial scholarship to Stanford University, and someone paid for the rest of his tuition. Mira Jones submitted several checks on his behalf over the course of his four-year college career. She’s also made donations to the medical examiner’s office in the last six months.”
Kong had all the info he needed.
Dr. Vines was about to get a visit.
CHAPTER SEVEN
PRECIOUS TIME
The medical examiner’s office was pungent with the aroma of death. Kong couldn’t put his finger on it; it was a mixture of cold, chemicals, and rotting. The chemicals masked most of it, but it was overwhelming. It was almost 9:00 pm, and although the office was closed, he knew that a lot of investigations and responses to other scenes allowed them to operate 24/7. The ME was basically on call whenever the Ree Heights Police department needed them to be. A black Mercedes S-series was the only car in the lot. Two coroner’s vans were parked in front, waiting to pull off if need be. From the driver’s seat of his two-door Cutlass, Kong leaned forward. Moose pulled from the blunt between his fingers and surveyed the scene.
“Okay. System override is only for ten minutes.” Mozzi spoke up from the back seat, the illumination from his laptop flashing across his face.
“I only need five.” Kong slipped the second glove of his set onto his hand and grabbed the handle to push his door open.
Moose passed Mozzi the blunt and hopped out with Kong to cover him. Mozzi pushed his laptop aside, took a pull from the blunt, and climbed into the driver’s seat. When Kong and Moose reached the front door, Kong grabbed the cold steel handle andpulled it right open. Grabbing the Glock from behind his back, Moose nodded, and his brother let himself inside. The front desk was empty, and so was the waiting area. The only light was the fluorescents flickering above him as the door quietly shut behind him. Kong paused, head shifting left to right as he listened.
Moans. Soft, sexual. Echoing in the distance through the hollow halls. He remembered where the office was. Slow, measured steps carried him in that direction, and he paused at the cracked door to Dr. Vine’s office. Pants down, he was balls deep in the receptionist on top of his desk. He pushed into her with force, hands gripping the desk for support as her pussy leaked on his dick. Papers slipped and fell all over the floor, and Dr. Vine’s face twisted in pleasure when she came for him.
“Fuck!” He grunted, pausing to savor the feel of her walls around his dick.
Click! The cold barrel of Kong’s pistol now rested at his temple.
