A chill skipped down Patrick’s spine. “So?”

“They control the account.”

“You’re saying they’re going tostealmy money if I don’t do what they say?”

“They wouldn’t do that.”

“No.” Patrick’s throat knotted. “But they would hold ithostagelike they’re doing with my car.”

Brian sighed. “They just want what’s best for you. You’re not thinking clearly right now, so they’re thinking for you.”

Did he hear himself? “This isinsane,how can you not see that? I’m not theblindedone in all this.”

“Just go home, Patrick. You have nowhere else to go. Your parents love you, they would never do anything to hurt you—you have to know that.”

His eyes swimming, Patrick whispered, “They already have.”

Patrick exited the diner and headed down the street, an emptiness invading him. For the first time in his life… he was completely alone with no one to turn to.

No one?

He faltered but didn’t stop as tears filled his eyes, fear and confusion clouding his mind. Inside his pocket, his thumb caressed the smooth screen of the cell phone, his heart beating faster with each step forward.
