I watch her as she fumbles with her phone before, “Shit.” She mumbles as it starts playing but I can’t really hear what’s being said.
“Mom, let me.” I reach over, grabbing her phone, and hitting the speaker button for her.
“Just go and talk to her. You’ll see.” Ro’s voice filters out of the speaker as he continues to talk and gives the address. “Just listen to her.”
Reaching back over to me she plucks her phone out of my hands and silences the speaker. “He’s called me several times over the last couple of weeks.”
“What?”
“He told me in a voicemail about being in prison. The reason why he was. The club. What his old club did to you…” She pauses. “I could hear how infuriated that he was about it.” I nod my head. “He’s going to kill them, isn’t he?”
I shrug my shoulders. “I haven’t asked.” Okay, technically that’s not entirely a lie, I only helped with a couple of things. “And I don’t really care to know cause then I don’t have to lie, if I’m questioned.”
My mother actually smiles and nods her head. “Smart.” She steps into me and drops her voice. “I’m glad that you’ve found someone who is willing to protect you no matter the cost.”
“Not just me.”
“I know that, too.”
“Let me show you what he did.” I nod towards the stairs as I walk up them with her trailing behind me. I open the door to the Linc’s bedroom, and she smiles, walking inside.
“He did all of this?”
“He did. It was a couple of days after the last time we came to talk you guys. And he then showed me this. He told me that he wanted me to feel comfortable to bring Linc back here when I start getting him again. Even though, we haven’t been together very long.” My mother shifts uncomfortably, again.
“You meant what you said about not taking him away from us?” She asks me as she sits down on the toddler bed.
Sitting down next to her I sigh. “Mom, regardless of how we’ve chosen to live this life and haven’t gotten along or the shit that we’ve been through, I cannot ever repay you for taking care of him when I couldn’t.”
“No,” She whispers looking back over at me. “That’s what parents are supposed to do. I’m sorry it hasn’t always felt like that for you.” Turning to me I glance out of the corner of my eye before she pulls me to her and hugs me. “That’s part of the reason why I came today.” She pulls back away from me and looks at me with sorrow. “I had no idea about any of that.” I swallow, not really sure what to say. “I can’t believe he did that. But I guess a lot of things make sense now.”
I can’t help but laugh at her statement.
“I’m not sure I can forgive him for that.”
“Mom.” I look at her, and she shakes her head. I can see the tears that are threatening to come out. “We all make mistakes.”
She just continues to shake her head, and I know that there’s more to the story.
“Mom, what is it?”
“We’re just taking some time to think.”
“Mom…” I gasp looking at her and reaching out, touching her arm.
“It’s fine.” She shakes her head. “Things haven’t been good for a while. We were only sticking it out for you and then when Linc…” She trails, but I know what else she needs to say. He’s the reason why they stayed together. She shakes her head as if she’s trying to erase the images as she closes her eyes tightly, and then when she opens her eyes again, she’s calmer.
“Come on, let’s get something to drink.” I cough out trying to break the uncomfortable moment. She stands with me, walking out of the room, and back down the stairs to the kitchen.
“Now, the question that I’ve been wanting to ask you for a while now.”
“Oh no.” I laugh as I set the glass down on the table, seeing a wide mischievous smile. “What is that?” I ask as I sip from my glass. “Am I going to need something stronger than this?” I ask her making her laugh again, but she nods her head.
“Oh, I probably will too.” It makes me even more curious as what she’s going to ask me, I open the fridge, grabbing out two beers and handing her one.
“Sorry, it’s all we have, right now.”
She smiles up at me as she takes a sip from it, and she laughs as she sets it down on the table. “So, I guess you have a type?” She cocks her eyebrow at me with a slight smirk on her face.
