Water runs from the door at the back of the room, and we both pause, looking at one another.
“Shit,” he mutters before stepping in front of me.
I feel him stiffen as the door opens; I’m sure his gun’s unwavering on the door.
“Jesus Christ!”Eli shouts, his arm lowering, but I still can’t see around him. “What the fuck are you doing here?”
Finally being able to get a look, I am also shocked as I see Dan standing in front of us.
“Same reason she is.” He nods at me.
“What?” I ask.
“Well, kind of.” He walks over to where Low lies and looks at her for a moment. “They told me you’d been attacked.”
“Oh,” I pause as I take a few more steps, removing myself from the safety Eli provided me with. “I mean, I had.” I nod my head. “But I’m fine. They told me if I didn’t cooperate, they’d let her die.”
“Has anyone else been coming by?” Eli asks, cutting our conversation out. Turning and looking back at the door, stepping in closer.
“Yeah, they’ve been switching off every few hours.”
“They may not now.” I took over at Eli’s
“Why not?”
“Cause the club’s almost here.” Eli tells him.
Glancing down, Eli pulls his phone out of his pocket before he presses the screen.
“Yeah?” There’s a long pause. I try to listen if I can hear anything. “Shit,” he mumbles to himself before hanging up the phone. “Z.”
Dan gives him a confused look as Eli waits for my brother torespond.
“Comms.” I mumble to Dan as I point to my ear, even though I don’t have one.
“Yeah, they’re on the way.”
“Who?” I ask, looking over at Eli, who sighs, nodding his head. “The cops.”
“What? Why?” Dan asks us.
“They’re setting up the club.”
“They’re setting them up for trafficking.”
He says nothing else, just nods his head.
I hear Eli ask something, I’m hoping it’s to Dan, because I can’t stop looking at Low.
She’s so still.
“Fuck,” I whisper, moving in closer. “I’m so fucking sorry.”
They kidnapped her because of me, and now she may die.
And if she does, it’s allmyfault….
