Chapter Twenty-Seven

LILY

Idon’t get a second to enjoy my newfound freedom as Blake pulls me aside the second I walk into Mr. Davis’ house the next morning. Even had to leave before Apollo woke and was able to give me a proper wake-up call.

“Some guy came around asking all kinds of questions. Especially about who’s paying me,” Blake says.

I groan knowing exactly the guy he’s talking about. “You didn’t tell him anything, did you?”

“Nah. That shit’s nobody’s business. And no matter how I feel about the guy, I wouldn’t fuck things up for you and him. Parker says you two are pretty happy.”

I blush. “Yeah. We are.”

More than I ever thought possible. It’s going to be impossible to let him go when the time comes.

The way he talked last night after the girls left, maybe I won’t have to. Again, can’t get my hopes up too high. Just in case.

“So how are things going?” I ask wanting to forget the looming nosy reporter storm.

“We’re ahead of schedule since Boone joined the crew.”

“He’s back?” I ask, surprised.

“Officially retired.”

“That’s wonderful. I’m glad he got out before he got hurt worse. Or you know… worse.”

Boone raced motocross. One of the best. He had a crash last year that almost killed him. Word got around he was thinking about retiring. “I would think with the four of you together again, you’d get anything but work done,” I tease Blake.

Blake, Boone, Theron, and Ash. They were all the worst kind of troublemakers when they got together. Gotta grow up some time I guess. If my sister can do it at nineteen, these guys can get it together in their late twenties.

Now that Blake has Parker and his baby girl, I doubt he’ll be getting into much trouble at all anymore. He has more important things to worry about.

“Seeing how Mr. Davis is staying out of your hair today, I’ll let you get back to it,” I say giving Blake’s planet-sized bicep a pat.

“Oh, here,” Blake says handing me a business card. “In case you want to call him up and cuss him out.”

It's the reporter's card.

I laugh. “I’ve already been warned it’s not a good idea to go out of my way to get rid of him. Only makes me look like I have something to hide.”

“Good point,” Blake says.

I keep the card anyway, to show Apollo. Maybe if he knows who it is that’s looking for him, he’ll know a way to get rid of him.

“I just have a few errands to run before I head back home. Let me know if you need anything.” I wave to Blake on my way out the door.

He gives me a salute. “You got it, boss.”
