“Baby? No. Uh uh. I’m not your baby. I’m not your anything anymore.” I’ll call the agency to assign him a new tutor. I’m done. That one kiss told me all I needed to know.
“Goodbye, Trent,” I bark and shut the door in his face.
Chapter eight
Trent
“Helpme,Roberta. You’remy only hope,” I say, doing my best Princess Leia impression as I drop to my knees next to the table at the library for our first tutoring session.
The email that I was reassigned came as no surprise.
I’m not your anything anymore. Meghan had made it clear she didn’t want to see me again for any reason.
But I can’t accept that. I love her. I’m going to do whatever it takes to prove it.
“I’ve gone over your assignments, Brewer. Not sure there’s any hope left for you.”
“Fuck my statistics class. I need my Meghan back.”
Roberta’s eyes go all sad-puppy before she lets out a high-pitched squeal that gets us dirty looks from a librarian shelving books nearby.
“Sorry,” Roberta whispers to her while I just shrug my shoulders like I had nothing to do with it. When Roberta catches me, she smacks my shoulder. “You prick.”
“What? I’m not the one screaming in the library.”
Roberta groans. “You are an insufferable ass, aren’t you? Hot but insufferable.”
“You think I’m hot?”
Roberta crosses her arms over her chest. “If you want me to help you get Meghan, hitting on me is the wrong way to go about it.”
“I’m just fucking around.”
“Yeah. That’s what got you into this mess. Maybe you should stop?”
“Fair point.” I climb off the floor and sit in the chair across the table from her.
Roberta lets out a heavy sigh. Leaning forward, she hardens her expression. Narrowing her eyes and pressing her lips together. “I should kick your ass. That girl’s gone out of her way not to let a boy distract her from her goals. The first guy she lets in fucks her up and breaks her heart so thoroughly, I’ve had to drag her out of bed all week.”
“That’s not what I wanted.”
“Your reputation would say otherwise.”
“Why would I have fucked with her? For the fun of it, right?” I wait for Roberta to reply. All she does is nod. “I’m getting no joy from this. I’m miserable without her. Hell, I’m willing to fail my classes, get kicked off the team to fix this. All I care about is Meghan. Please, Roberta. Help me.”
Her shoulders slump as she sighs. “Damn it, Brewer.”
“Is that a yes?” I ask, hopefully.
“If you hurt her again, I’ll kill you.” Judging by the darkness in her tone, she’s not fucking around.
I throw my hands up. “Understood.”
“So, what’s the plan? As hurt as she is your gesture better be the grandest of them all.”
Roberta’s brow wrinkles when I shake my head. “Trust me. That will only make things worse. I just need her to know the truth.”
“I’m listening.”
