Taking a step back, I smirk. She’s right where I want her.
Chapter Ten
SERENITY
He says he knows the real reason I didn’t put Nair in his shampoo.
Yet, Nico doesn’t tell me what the reason is.
Does he think I still love him? He’s delusional if he does.
“Are you sure the spider is dead?”
“Miff took his tarantula home.”
My eyes widen. “It’s his pet?”
“Yes.” Nico disappears into the bathroom. I hear water running. He returns several minutes later and climbs into bed.
“Get under the blanket and go to sleep. You have a dress fitting at nine a.m.,” he says as he turns his back.
The asshole moved up the wedding date. I purposely lay on top of the sheet, pull the blanket over my body, turn my back to him, and flip off the lamp.
This moment is so different from the last time we were together. It was perfect until he brought up marriage. As much as I wanted to be with Nico, I couldn’t. My trauma hung over my head like a storm cloud. It’s not like I don’t understand theplane could crash with my child on it. Or that he could fall down the steps and break his neck. I cringe at the thought. But raising a child in the mafia world automatically makes them a target. I know. There’s still a target on my back. My enemy already said he knows where I am at all times. He wants to put the fear into me. Little does he know I’ll be ready for him. Thankfully, I keep my child hidden from the world so no one knows he exists.
I ease onto my back and peek at Nico, who’s also turned my way. A small smile lifts my lips. He’s never been able to keep his back turned to me. I slide my hand over my bonnet. What am I going to do? Mr. Vindictive Mafia Boss moved up the wedding date, huh? I arch a brow at an idea, and a devilish smirk lifts my lips. He’s in for a rude awakening.
Iflip the perfectly round pancake in the pan as I hum along to the song playing on my phone lying on the kitchen counter. It took Nico roughly twenty minutes before his body was wrapped around mine and his hard dick poked my spine. A part of me wanted to ease out of bed and sleep in the chair to escape the feelings that were choking me. Then the other part of me missed his strong, muscled arms wrapped around me. Truthfully, it’s my safe place.
My thick, wavy hair hangs in a long braid over my left shoulder. I’m wearing a white tank with the top three tiny buttons undone and yellow sleep shorts.
“Good morning, future wife.” Nico claps his hands as he strolls toward me.
I cringe at the sound of future wife.
He hovers over my shoulder, like an oversized, muscled beast. “Looks delicious.” His deep vocals ignite something insideme that feels familiar. I hate that I love how good he makes me feel.
Focus, Serenity.
“Can’t believe you cooked breakfast.”
“I have to eat. So I cooked enough for both of us,” I say.
“Yeah, I don’t remember you cooking for us in the past.”
He grips my hips and plants a kiss against the crown of my head. My heart lurches in my chest. For a brief second, I consider not following through with my plan.
“Have a seat,” I tell him.
He eagerly sits at the table. Nico is dressed in a t-shirt and navy basketball shorts. I peek at his muscled pecs straining against the fabric. I have to stop lusting after my ex who’s now my future husband.
Shit, future husband.
Why is this my life? Because you agreed to a deal, Serenity. For your dad.
I place three pancakes and three strips of bacon on a plate for him and two pancakes and two strips of bacon on my plate. My back is to Nico as I pick up one of the two flour sifters and sprinkle powdered sugar over his pancakes. I use the second sifter to sprinkle powdered sugar over mine. Afterwards, I discard both sifters in the sink and rinse them with water. I pick up our plates and carry them to the table. My heart races in my chest.
“Don’t get used to this,” I sigh as I place our plates on the table.
