"The wolves found me and told me I should come to you. My wolf sister told me it is hard to make babies when we are apart."
Laylah cried. "They came to you?"
"Yes. My sister, the she-wolf, was concerned about you and did not understand why I was not there with you."
"Are you coming here?"
"I am. You did not marry him?"
"I did not. I have run away from the fort. It is no longer a home for me."
"Then you will be my woman?"
"I will. I missed you. I missed you so very, very much. I didn't know it was possible to long to be with someone with so much passion. I ache with the need to be with you."
There was no reply and a lengthy silence ensued.
"Eagle Heart? Are you there?"
"I am. I am coming to you. Not only do you take my breath from me when I am with you, but sometimes you steal my ability to communicate with you in our mind speak, also."
"Is this good or bad?"
"It is good. I should be there with you before daylight. It is in my mind to make you my wife, my Sits-beside-him wife. Do you agree?"
She cried again. "I do. I have never loved anyone like I love you, Eagle Heart. I want to spend my life with you, even though I am afraid."
"Why are you afraid?"
"Because I know nothing about the Blackfeet and nothing about your camp, and I know almost nothing about how to survive in the wilderness. It is frightening to think of all the skills I don't have in order to survive in this part of the country."
"I will be with you to help you learn these talents and also to help ease you into my tribe and tribal life. My people will come to love you."
"And, I wish to be with you, but I don't know if what you say about your people is true. Yet, I can promise you this: I will try to make our life together a good one."
"I know you will. Where are you in the coulee? Are you in a safe place?"
"I have made my seat under a willow tree close to the creek."
"I see it."
"You see it?"
"I do. I think you will be safe there. I will look at the prairie around you to try to determine if there is an enemy nearby."
"You will look around this place? From where you are now?"
"Yes."
"I...I don't understand."
"I am a man of mysterious ways."
"I still don't understand."
"Since I was very young," he said in their mind-to-mind talk, "I have been trained to take on the duty of being a healer for my people. There are many ways to help people to become well. But, only our medicine men are able to use the gifts sent from Sun, the Creator, to aid a man or a woman to become healthy again. Some of these ways to help others include being aware of what is taking place in the environment, even at great distances."
There was another pause in their communication, and then he said, "I do not sense any danger to you for now. I must set my mind to get to you quickly, and so I will end our talk here. You have only to reach out to me if you need me."
