“Momma! I didn’t know you were awake.”

“G-glad I w-woke up.”

“Miss Evans, I’d like your permission to marry Carly.”

“B-bit l-late t-to b-be asking th-that,” her mother slurred. “B-but, y-yes.”

Carly hugged her mother, so grateful to see the recognition in her eyes that she’d not seen in days. She wasn’t sure how long it would last, but she’d enjoy every precious second.

Just as she’d enjoy every precious second with the man she’d been blessed to love and be loved by.

EPILOGUE

CARLY AND STONE married a month later in Carly’s backyard. The weather was perfect, as was the day.

Carly’s mother knew who she was, knew what was happening, that Carly was marrying her best friend.

Stone had arranged repairs to the outside of the house that had included a new roof and fresh paint. He’d had the landscaping redone with lots of vivid flowers that brightened its appearance, and had even surprised her with two white rocking chairs to put on the front porch with the ferns he’d hung.

Gone was the neglect and in its place was happiness and a new beginning. One where they would live in Carly’s home to care for her mother, after which time they’d decide where they wanted to live, what they wanted to do.

Carly had kept her job at the hospital, but had quit the insurance claims job so she had time to spend with her mother, and with Stone.

Stone’s family, Rosalyn, Joyce, and several of Stone’s friends were in attendance at the small ceremony in Carly’s backyard and celebrated there with them after the vow exchange.

Carly had never been hugged so much as she had that day by Stone’s family, by his parents, his sisters, nephews and nieces, by his friends.

When he finally rescued her from them and pulled her into his arms, he grinned down at her.

“Hello, Mrs. Parker. Anyone told you how beautiful you are today?”

Heart full of love, Carly nodded. “Almost everyone here.”

He smiled. “You are beautiful, Carly.”

He made her feel beautiful. That day and every day after.
