SUBJECT: A request

Kate,

These emails back and forth these last few weeks have meant more to me than you could possibly know. Talking to you again is more than I ever dreamed of. I would be content just knowing you’re happy.

The renovations have just about wrapped. There is just one room left, the one upstairs with the window facing Farmer John’s. I’d like to make it into a library/office. I was hoping you could help me with a few last-minute details? I think the room needs a feminine touch, and yours is the opinion that matters most to me. (Emma would make me build it out of composted newspapers or lord knows what else.) Have you received the fabric samples and paint swatches I’ve shipped? I know that it seems a bit out of nowhere, but it’s really something that must be decided in person.

Also, I have one more request. And it’s a big one. It’s a bit last minute, but do you have any plans next week?

I have agreed to attend this premiere for a special I recorded a few months back (why they need a premiere for a show that’s being streamed online, I do not understand).

I have a slot for a plus one. All flights and hotels included. (Separate room for you, of course.) I would really like to see you in person. I know I said email is enough, and it absolutely is, but if you are interested in meeting me, please let me know.

I will make the arrangements just in case.

Yours forever,

Charlie

SUBJECT: Just checking in

Hello Kate,

It’s been a day, and you haven’t responded to my last message. Not to get all Needy Petey on you (too soon?), but have you given any more thought to the premiere?

I know LA is a circle of hell and things didn’t end so well last time, but I swear, I’m better prepared now. I have tools to help me cope with leaving the house, and seeing you again would be a gift I don’t deserve but would love, nonetheless.

No pressure either way.

I love these conversations, and I don’t want them to end. I’m sorry for all the pain and hurt and confusion I ever caused you. The chickens don’t fall far from the tree, or whatnot.

Yours forever,

Charlie

Kate,

I promised myself I wouldn’t bother you again if you didn’t respond, but the premiere is today. I’m sitting in the room we shared at Harrison’s, praying that there is still a chance you might make it.

Emma and Harrison are acting weird and it’s making me anxious. I’m worried about being on the red carpet today, but I know even if I stumble and say something stupid, it will be okay.

I will be okay.
