He spluttered slightly before regaining his composure. “Well I can assure you, I was doing nothing of the sort.”
Everyone was staring, momentarily lifted out of their shock to watch what was happening.
Cooper grinned but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Great, so we have an understanding that in future you’re keeping away from Molly and her ass?”
Molly returned, taking in the stand-off between Coop and Super Creep.
“What’s going on?”
Cooper rolled his bottom lip, not taking his eyes off the guy in front of him. “Nothing, we’re all just getting acquainted, aren’t we Doc?”
“Qu’est-ce que tu as fait?” she hissed at her brother.
Cooper shrugged, turning away.
She rolled her eyes before focusing on the rest of us in the room. “He’s going to be in Room 306, but go home. It’s late and there’s nothing you can do right now. You had a hard game tonight. You need to rest too.”
I looked at the clock, it was twelve twenty a.m.
I pulled her into a hug, my throat tightening again. “Thanks, Mol. Thank you.”
She rubbed my back, returning my hug. “Do you want me to look at your hand?”
“No it’s good, it’s been sorted.”
Huck stood back up. “What does everyone want to do?”
Jasper turned to everyone. “We go home. Molly’s right, we aren’t going to do any good here and we need to rest. We still have to play in two days. Everyone go and we’ll be back here tomorrow.”
“Thank you, Doctor Marks. We’ll be in touch tomorrow to discuss next steps. Thank you for your work this evening.” Ford held his hand out and Molly shook it, followed by Erica’s.
“You’re welcome.”
We all collected our things and started for the door. Cooper flung his arm over Molly’s shoulder, kissing her head as we walked out, holding onto her until Super Creep had disappeared down the corridor.
“Sorry, Mol. I did know this was your hospital and I do listen to you, it’s just been a lot tonight, and I wasn’t expecting to see my little sister in Doctor fancy dress or operating on one of my best friends.”
“It’s not fancy dress, Coop; this is what I wear every day and I’m excellent at my job. Top of my class, in case that was something else you’d forgotten.” She shoved his shoulder.
“I know, I’m joking. And I’m proud of you; he couldn’t have been in better hands.”
“Thanks. Anyway, I need to go and check on him. I’ll see you tomorrow. Give Freddie and the bump a kiss for me.”
“Yeah, I will. I’ll see you tomorrow. Love you.”
We all hugged her goodbye, all of us so grateful for what she’d done. Grateful she was one of us and with us, and that a stranger hadn’t been working on Felix.
She knew the stakes.
I turned before she left. “Hey, Mol, who was that pervy doctor?”
“Who?”
“That weirdo in the room with us?”
“Oh, I don’t know him really. He’s a resident covering this week from Mercy.”
“We didn’t like him.”
