I liked her immediately and hugged her back.
“I’d love to.”
Molly moved away to kiss Freddie and pat her stomach. “Hi, bump. How’re you doing?”
“It’s good, kicking a lot today though.” She rubbed her hands across it, back and forth.
Molly put her stethoscope to it, listening. “Yep, loads of wriggling.”
Drew laughed. “That your medical assessment, is it?”
“Sure is. Wriggling is an official term,” she grinned, putting her stethoscope back around her neck.
“And what about this one?” he thumbed to Felix, who’d fallen asleep. “How long can you keep him on morphine? Because he’s fucking funny.”
Molly sighed, becoming serious, her hands pushed into her coat pockets. “He’s on a pretty strong dose right now, but we’ll reduce it tomorrow, and then he’ll have it to use if he needs it. He’s going to be in a lot of pain for a while, but I want to see how he moves without it.”
“When do you need to operate again?”
“We need to let his leg start healing first, so it’ll be in about six weeks or so.”
“How’s he been?”
I watched Molly’s eyes flicker with something I couldn’t decipher, and she didn’t look at anyone as she replied. In fact, she was studying the floor very closely.
“As expected. Same Felix he always is.”
Cooper rubbed through his beard. “Does he know the extent of the damage?”
“I’ve told him but he’ll need reminding. He won’t remember.” She looked at her watch, walked over to Felix and checked his charts and vitals. “The nurse will be in soon to take his blood. How long are you guys planning to stick around?”
Drew shrugged. “We haven’t got anything else to do.”
“Okay, but he needs to rest too. Don’t be here all day on Xbox. And can you message the others and ask them to stagger when they’re going to visit?”
“Yes, sure. We can go for lunch while he’s asleep and come back. Can you come too? Do you get a lunchbreak?”
“I’m not sure today, I’m pretty busy. But if we go down to the cafeteria, I can squeeze you in for thirty minutes,” she laughed.
“Wow, my sister; big shot surgeon squeezing me in for lunch.” He poked her in the ribs, making her squeal, and she nudged him back.
“Yeah, and don’t fucking forget it this time.”
Drew wrapped his arms around me, my back to his chest, his chin on my shoulder as we laughed at the two of them messing around. They were making so much noise I was amazed Felix was sleeping through it.
“Are you good with lunch here?” Drew kissed me, his nose rubbing along my cheek.
“Yes, I’m happy anywhere.”
“What a coincidence, because I’m happy wherever you are.” He kissed me again as the door to the room opened and another doctor walked in.
No. No. No. This can’t be happening.
Drew groaned but my blood ran cold. This was not his hospital. I’d double checked last night when I knew where they’d taken Felix.
“Fucking Super Creep,” he whispered into my ear, not noticing my body had gone stiff in his arms.
And as Drew was also not looking at him, he didn’t see the fury descend over Richard’s face as he took in the scene.
