I shrugged. “I had rounds.”

His smile was less warm and more sinister. “Thought you would have been here to see your favorite patient come in.”

“She’d already seen me.” Felix winked at him, his arm squeezing tighter around my shoulder, which Hunter ignored.

“What surgeries have you got today?”

“Um, nothing this morning, I moved things around so I could observe yours. Then a hip arthroscopy and a tendon repair later this afternoon.”

“Seems like a light day for you.” His scowl dripped with as much sarcasm as his pointed tone, and Jameson smacked him on the arm before I could answer.

“Felix, you all good with everything? We need to go and get the paperwork started. Molly can sort you out, I’m sure.”

He nodded to Jameson. “Yeah, I’m good. Thanks, Doc. You can leave me in her very capable hands.”

“Great, see you in a couple of hours.”

We watched them walk off, their white coats flaring in unison as they turned the corner.

“Oh my God, I thought Hunter’s head was going to explode.” Brooke hissed, her eyes still open wide.

In her defense, she hadn’t been working at the hospital long enough to experience the whole spectrum of Hunter andJameson’s moods. But even I wasn’t entirely clear why Hunter was being extra-level dickhead these days.

“I know, not sure what’s going on with him lately, but he’s on my case about everything.”

Felix shrugged. “Because he’s a douche.”

He wasn’t wrong.

“Come on, big mouth, let’s get you admitted.”

“Hey, what did I do? Not my problem that guy has a massive stick up his ass.”

“Come on.” I tugged on his hoodie, pulling him away.

“Good to meet you, Brooke. Come and see me before my surgery, you can tell me all about Doctor Marks.” He called over his shoulder to her, and the tiny blush she’d been wearing darkened slightly.

“She’ll do no such thing.”

“We’ll see.” He pulled me into him again, his lips smacking against mine.

I stopped at the nurses’ station and leaned over the desk, earning myself a swat on the hand. “Betty, what room is Felix Cleverly in please? He’s ready for admission.”

“Twenty-seven ten.” She handed me a chart with paperwork, and another clipboard which she passed to Felix, along with a pen, showing him where to sign.

“Thanks, Betty. Doctor Bentley and Doctor Reyes have his other forms.”

She pinned me with a stern, matronly glare that required no words, because she knew I knew that all paperwork needed to be kept together. And I knew she knew I knew that.

Felix finished flicking through the forms and slid the clipboard over to her with a wink. “All done.”

I pulled him away before I got a verbal scolding. “Thanks, Betty, I’ll make sure Hunter and Jameson bring the rest.”

“You do that.”

“Did you just get into trouble?”

I shook my head. “Nope. I don’t get into trouble.”
