Mama:They said he never showed up.

My eyebrows lifted. I didn’t understand what was going on. What kept him from going to

work?

Me:Did you check with Julie?

Julie was his girlfriend. She was always convincing him to call out to spend the day with her. He didn’t stay here for free. I told him if there ever came a time that he couldn’t pay his share of the bills, we would have a problem. My mind was everywhere though, wondering where he could be. When my phone rang, I jumped. It was Seven.

“Hello?”

“Hey, baby. Umm . . . your brother at the diner.”

“What in the hell is he doing at the diner?”

“He said you always talking about the food here, and he wanted to try it out. His phone is dead. It must not have taken a charge last night. He told me to call, just in case y’all were looking for him.”

“I’ll be damned. Is his girlfriend with him?”

“A white girl? Yeah.”

I rolled my eyes. I was willing to bet it was her idea. “Okay. My family has a whole thread going about where he could be. Had everybody worried.”

“A’ight, baby. Let me get my food, and I’ll call you back.”

“Okay.”

I immediately went to our thread. That nigga is in Nome, eating. His phone is dead. SMH.

This shit disrupted my workflow.Ugh!This was why I should have had my phone on DND. This setback was gonna have me working this whole weekend. It was partially my fault though. I just couldn’t get enough of Seven. His dick was worth breaking a five-year hiatus. I felt like a virgin all over again. When he pushed inside of me, I thought my hymen had reattached and had to be ruptured all over again.

Since my mind was long gone, I figured I may as well head to the diner for lunch myself and see my man. Going to my room, I changed into something more presentable. After grabbing my purse, my phone rang. When I saw it was Seven, I answered. “Hello?”

“Hey, baby. Finally got my food.”

“Okay. I’m gonna head out there to eat with you.”

“I took my food to-go. I’m back home, but you’re welcome to grab something and come here.”

I frowned slightly. That was strange. Seven never took his food to-go. They always ate at the diner and acted like fools. I loved the environment being around his family. They were crazy as hell, but they were friendly and definitely entertaining. This was further proving that something was up. This time, I decided to pry.

“Umm . . . okay. Why you took your food home? Y’all always eat at the diner.”

“Yeah. I’ll tell you when you get here. I need to look into your eyes when I tell you.”

“Damn. It’s that serious?”

“Yeah, it is. See you in a little while, baby.”

“O-okay.”

I was nervous now. Just after I’d gotten comfortable with us, something could possibly have me retreating all over again. Closing my eyes briefly, I took deep breaths to calm my nerves, then made my way to the parking lot. When I descended the stairs, I saw a guy from Watchful Eyes outside on the phone. I’d never seen any of them here. It was the one with tattoos all over. I couldn’t remember his name. He also had a gorgeous smile that seemed to capture me whenever I saw it.

I could tell that he noticed me glancing at him, but he didn’t acknowledge me. Maybe he had business in the complex. I brushed it off and got in my car to head to Nome . . . or big city Nome as they called it. I rolled my eyes at the thought. Nome was so small, if you blinked while driving, you would miss it completely. You better hadn’t said that shit in front of any of the Hendersons though. They would be ready to cuss somebody out behind big city Nome.

When I stopped at the diner to get some pasta, I noticed there was hardly anyone here. My brother was already gone as well. I glanced over at the tables they normally sat at, and it was damn near empty. Marcus and his wife were seated in a back corner, and they seemed to be deep in conversation while eating their food. Mrs. Jenahra gave me a bright smile, and once I ordered my food, I was on my way.

She didn’t act like anything was out of the ordinary. So everyone knew what was going on.Ugh.I hoped it wasn’t any bullshit like what they went through with niggas tryna get at Seven and Mythic. I wanted to close my eyes and huff, but I was already driving. I glanced in my rearview mirror as I got over inthe turning lane on Highway 90 and saw the Watchful Eyes guy again. Was he following me?
