Caleb had lain next to her, on his side with his arm propped to keep his head up. “I could watch you orgasm every day.”

Megan’s heart stuttered. “I don’t think I could say no to that.”

Caleb chuckled and kissed her forehead.

The problem was her feelings. She couldn’t see a way to be fuck buddies for a long period of time while keeping her heart protected.

She needed answers.Fuck it. Megan rolled to face him, her hand keeping her head up, and adjusted her clothes so they weren’t lumped under her side. “I need to ask you something.”

“Anything.”

Megan started with the easiest questions. “Why didn’t you tell me you were going to move back to town? Or that you were taking over the bookstore?”

“It all happened after that night at your apartment. I didn’t want to say anything because I wasn’t sure if you wanted more than that one night or to never see me again. And then it happened so fast. Between giving notice, packing, moving, it was a lot.” He took a breath. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”

Megan didn’t know what to make of that. A lot of it sounded like an excuse – something to say to a hook up to blow them off. That had never been Caleb’s style. “Thank you. For the apology, I mean.”

Caleb smiled at her, and it was like the entire room warmed. “Anything else?”

Yes. “I don’t know how to say it.”

“Okay. Can I tell you something instead?”

Megan nodded.

“I meant it when I said I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you. I don’t want this week to be the only time we spend with each other.”

“Me neither.” Megan grinned. Hope bloomed but she kept a tight leash on it. “What are you hoping for after the wedding?”

“I’m hoping you’ll go to dinner with me.”

“I’d like that.” Megan leaned across the small space to kiss him again but froze when she heard Tucker’s voice from the hall.

Caleb put a finger to his lips in silent direction, and Megan nodded.

She couldn’t make out what he said, but she heard Ainsley’s response, clear as day. “You don’t really expect to find them together, do you? I mean, really, Megan and Caleb? Talk about a mistake. Come on, Tucker, we should go make our own fun – take a page out of their book…if that’s even what they’re doing.”

Megan rolled her eyes and could picture Ainsley hanging all over Tucker in the hallway. She’d been trying to get Tucker into bed for years and had failed each time and still didn’t get that he had no interest.

Megan sat up and moved to the edge of the bed but didn’t stand.

Tucker’s voice was clearer, and closer, and Megan could tell he was pissed. “You’re the one who insinuated something’s going on between them, Ainsley. Don’t try to back out of it now.”

Ainsley huffed. “Even if they are sleeping together, who cares?”

“They’d better not be.” Venom laced Tucker’s voice. “I warned him years ago to stay the hell away from Megan. He swore he had no interest. Bastard better not be going back on that now.”

Megan’s heart dropped as she twirled to meet Caleb’s gaze. His green eyes were filled with shame.

She couldn’t speak, couldn’t…couldn’t think. She opened her mouth to say something, anything, but no sound came out. Caleb shook his head and pointed to the door.

Tucker was still out in the hall.

Red-hot anger swelled up from her belly and into her chest, filling the new cracks in her heart.

“Get out,” she seethed.

“Please,” he started. “Let me explain.”
