Megan stood up when he reached for her. She didn’t give a damn if Tucker found out. Not anymore. “No.” Megan unlocked the door and opened it. “Get out.”
Tucker and Ainsley stood across the hall, in Caleb and Tyler’s room. Tucker stormed across the hall and made as if he would cross into her room.
Megan’s lungs couldn’t get enough air. Her older brother, the one she trusted to have her back even with his overprotective bullshit, had gone behind her back and threatened… She could hardly wrap her mind around it.
She glared at her brother. “Don’t even think about it.”
“If he touched you, I swear I’ll kill him.” Rage contorted Tucker’s features. Megan didn’t cower or shrink from her older brother. Growing up with two older brothers meant Megan had learned to go toe-to-toe with anyone. She knew Tucker loved her, but he had gone so far beyond the line of brotherly protection that Megan was tempted to drop-kick him across the room.
“Shut up. You had no right to threaten him, now or back then.”
“Megan, it’s my job to protect you.”
“The hell it is! Don’t speak to me as if I’m some simpering little thing that can’t handle her own business.”
Tucker motioned to Caleb behind her. “Obviously you can’t if you’ve been fucking my best friend.”
Fury erupted in Megan’s chest. “It’s none of your damn business who I do or don’t sleep with, Tucker. It has never been and will never be any of your business. Stay out of it.”
Ainsley stepped into the hall. “Let’s go, Tucker. We don’t want to wake up Rose and Henry.”
Their room was right down the hall.
Megan glared at both her brother and Ainsley as the latter led the former back to the first floor.
Megan turned to face Caleb, her heart breaking. “Isthatwhy you never called me after that first night? All these years I spent wondering, and thisweekwe spent hiding, and it was all becauseTuckertold you to stay away from me?”
Tears filled her eyes as she waited for Caleb to answer.
“Megs –”
Pain sliced through her heart at the name only he ever used. “Don’t call me that. Not anymore.”
Shame filled his eyes as he corrected himself. “Megan. I’m sorry. I was stupid. Please, don’t let something stupid come between what we have.”
“There’s nothing to come between. We don’t have anything anymore, except memories. Get out.”
Caleb opened his mouth as if to say something else but closed it again and left.
Megan locked the door behind him.
