“You don’t think Icould possibly treat her right, do you?”
Jude reads the printout, nods, tosses it in the box, and picks it up as if it weighs more than an elephant, “I’d like you to prove me wrong, Jett, and Ithink you should have a chance to do that. Now don’t set off the alarm tonight! Later.”
* * *
Tonight Idon’t set off the alarm because my girl’s disarmed it, waiting for me. My girl.Fuck.The thought of that being true, the thought of that beingpermanent, sends shivers down my spine.
I peek in to see her moping around on her bed listening to my last album and my jaded ass emo self feels fireworks of elation and validation explodeinside me. My emo girl! Hearts might as well burst from my eyes as Ipeel her window open and see her sad face light up with a grin. Yup, this ismygirl. Not just her perky breasts, tight little arse, pouty mouth, or fit fanny that Ispend every spare minute wondering if it’s bare like Ilike, wondering how it will taste, and if it can take all Ihave to offer. No, not just her body, all of her is mine, and her family will have no choice but to accept that.
“Thanks for the roses and whiskey.” She fists her hand around the collar of my Misfits tank like she did last night, pulling me into her. She has sampled some and Ican smell it on her breath. She gets flushed looking at my tank. “My punk rock boy.”
“Took you long enough to realise your type was wrong. That your type wasme.Huh, darling?”
She nods quickly. She’s wearing another tank braless, this time with Jack White’s face stretched across her perfect tits. Ihope he’s not my competition because he’s a much better guitar player than me and a literal daddy, which may make him even more of Baby’s type. This girl truly has no idea how many kinks she has hiding under the surface, and Ican’t wait to uncoverallof them. My fingers glide over the outline of her nipples, and she gasps into my mouth as Ikiss her, lost in a whiskey-coated daydream, my tongue claiming hers.
We jump, hearing Jewels’ pissed off voice on the other side of the bedroom door. “I can see Bryson hovering in the driveway! This is not happening tonight! Goodnight, Jett!”
She’s a fucking adult!Iwant to scream, and Inearly do, but Baby puts her mouth on mine one more time and whispers, “Sorry,” against my lips. Ihate to leave her, but Isay goodbye and again promise to fix all this. Ihave zero doubt about that.
Chapter 14
Jett
More studio time this afternoon, and again Ihave Bryson roll up to the Morningstar house beforehand, yeah, the one Iused to be welcome at day or night.
I’ve been knocking for a solid minute when Lola comes out lacking weapons this time. Her eyes are ringed and her toxic sludge green hair is a fright. She looks over my offerings and sighs. Today it’s brunch from their favourite restaurant and a stupidly huge teddy bear for Baby, bigger than Lola herself.
“Jett, five weeks ago Baby thought she was getting engaged. Her soul was crushed. What on fucking planet earth makes you a good rebound candidate?”
“What the fuck made that random actor named after a toddler that gets hit by a truck in a Stephen King novel a good candidate?”
She leans in like I’m completely daft. “Random, Jett. Ran. Dom. Disposable. NO STRINGS ATTACHED.”
“She doesn’t want him, Lola, she wants ME! I’m not perfect like he is and don't you think she has a right to want something different this time ‘round? Yes, I’m messy, maybe she needs that right now! Iwant her and not just because she’s hot and Iswiped her on a dumb fucking app! Iknow her, and having a fling with a stranger will just make her feel worse. Maybe Iwant strings!”
“Jett, Ilove you, but why the hell would you want strings? Every night on tour might as well be your personal orgy! Iknow you. Iknow how piecesof ass are disposable to you. What makes you think we’d forget that because you’re horny for my sister all of a sudden?!”
“If Iwere still content with shagging strangers, Iwouldn’t be standing here, Lo! All of a sudden?” Iscoff. “You’re telling me you’re all really that daft?”
“What are you talking about, Jett?”
“You’ve never noticed me look at her before, Lola?”
She sighs, “May-I dunno! What?”
“Don’t tell the others because Iwant to tell you all one by one … I-I’ve been in love with your sister since the day we met, all right! Iknew Iwasn’t her type so Itried to move on! That’s why Iwas miserable with everyone else, can’t you see that? Matilda is all I’ve ever wanted and now that she wants me I’m never going back to hiding. No fucking way I’m backing down. Ineedher, Lola.”
“You can’t be serious!”
“And why the hell not?”
“There’s no way! I’ve never even seen you flirt with Baby!”
“I flirt with everyone!”
“Not her! Never with ...” She gasps. “Jesus Christ, Jett! That’s why you don’t flirt with my sister? You’ve been hopelessly in love with her this whole time? And what, you didn’t tell her because you’re scared of dad?”
“I was scared of her laughing in my face, actually! But apparently, Ishould’ve been scared of Dad, instead. Inever said anything because Iwas so far from her type, Ithought she might hurl at the thought of me. But some fuckin’ miracle happened at the pool party, and now I’m magically what she wants; suddenly, Iamher type. Bloody hell, I’m not gonna question that!”
