Evelyn accepted the comment. We stepped outside. The weather had turned warm. Office workers filled the sidewalks.

“Thank you for the introduction,” I said.

“You’re welcome.”

“I mean it.”

“I believe you.”

She walked beside me toward the corner.

“You seem happy,” she said.

“I am.”

“With Dani.”

“Yes.”

The direct yes felt good. Evelyn accepted it.

“I owe you an apology for treating Dani’s difference from you as the explanation for why you are happy.”

“She is different.”

“Yes. But I mistook spontaneity for recklessness and used the same mistake when I left.”

“I do not need you to reinterpret our relationship now.”

“No.” Evelyn stopped near the crosswalk. “I only do not want you accepting the renewable role to prove you can take risks.”

The warning irritated me, possibly because it was useful.

“I will evaluate the role on its merits.”

“Of course.”

“And the internal promotion.”

“Of course.”

“And neither decision concerns you.”

“No.”

The light changed. We crossed.

At the far side, Evelyn said, “Does Dani know what happens after the marathon?”

I stopped.

“What do you mean?”

“The challenge ends. The race ends. Her role in your training already changed. What does the relationship look like when the shared project is over?”

She had crossed a boundary. She had also named something I had not asked directly. Dani and I had agreed to continue after the competition. We had not discussed after the marathon. The race remained a horizon every plan moved toward.

“What happens is our business,” I said.
