Sitting at my desk, I rummage through some of the inventory sheets on my desk before Jensen bursts through my door.
“Okay, hear me out.” She takes the seat across from me and pulls it closer to my desk. “I miss Beck. You miss Adam. Let’s go down to Florida and see them this weekend.”
For a second, I genuinely consider it. I wouldn’t mind a weekend with warm weather and seeing Adam, but then the appeal lessens the more I think about it.
“As fun as that sounds in theory, Jen, I don’t think I can. It’s your last day, and the new girl starts on Sunday?—”
Jensen doesn’t let me finish before calling my bullshit. “You mean the new hire who’s been bartending in Boston for the last decade… Mia, come on. Listen, I knew convincing you wouldn’t be easy, so I came prepared. I already checked the schedules—you have the best staff on shift this weekend. Let’s face it, you always set a very balanced and well-fitted staff each time, but they’re all extremely capable this weekend. Your presence isn’t exactly needed.”
“Ouch, warn a girl.” I know she’s right, but still, this place means so much to me, and it feels like I’m really just getting started. It’s too soon to be leaving for a full weekend, and to that point… “Wouldn’t it be a little weird for me to just show up at Spring Training? We’ve been dating for barely a month. It screams a bit like crazy girlfriend, no?”
“No, it doesn’t. It would if you had some weird motive for going, not because you want to see him. Come with me, you know you want to.”
Shit, I really do. The hesitation still shows on my face, but Jensen leans in. “Picture it, Mia. Adam’s ass in baseball pants.”
At that, I can’t help but laugh. She’s got a good point there.
“And how would Beck feel about that statement?”
“He’d say, ‘Have you seen Adam’s ass in baseball pants?’ Stretching before the game? The man’s obsessed with me, but he’s not blind.”
Yeah, that’s fair. His ass is pretty great. Dammit, I want to give in. Things have been pretty amazing, and him leaving hasn’t caused any weird dynamic shifts between us. His initiative on communicating hasn’t dropped either.
“Would it help if I told you that I know for sure Adam would want to see you?”
I was already halfway there, but sure. “I’m listening.”
Jensen smirks, knowing she’s almost got me. Pulling out her phone, she scrolls a bit then shows me a group chat.
The Real MVPS
Beck
This is bullshit. Why do Dex and Will get to have their girls on the plane with them while we travel?
Callie
I’m the TEAM PHOTOGRAPHER!
Will
Don’t lessen Callie’s presence like that. Apologize.
Lucie
Oh he’s just sad because he misses Jensen. Give him a break.
Beck
Sorry Callie Bear, you know I still love you.
Beck
Just platonically. Actual friends, brother-sister style, you know… unlike other people.
Tripp
Fuck all the way off. I’m tired of explaining this shit to you guys.
