“Okay, baby,” Adam says, following me back to my office.
“I’m serious.”
“I know you are.” His hands grip my waist and he spins me around, pulling me flush with him. “If you really want to stay and finish whatever you’re doing, I’ll stay and help.”
If he’d said that in the hallway, I probably would’ve taken him up on it, but with another inhale of him, the want of being in bed with him gets stronger. I’m actually getting more irritated at the fact that I’ve put up this much of a fight to begin with.
His forehead rests on mine. “It’s up to you, honey.”
“I’ll have you know that there was a time when I’d be here till dawn because leaving in the middle of a task just felt wrong to me.” Leaning back, I look in his eyes. “But right now, I want to go home with you.”
Adam tilts my head up by my chin. This smile on his face has my whole body feeling weightless, and this kiss he gives me has me a little worried that the butterflies erupting in my stomach might actually lift me up.
I don’t feel grounded until he breaks and plants a kiss on my forehead.
“Let me get my stuff and we can go.” I begrudgingly pull back from his arms and move straight to my desk. The temptation to leave it all here lingers in the back of my mind, but I’m not sure I’ll ever be that carefree.
I make sure everything’s shut off and my drawers locked.
“I got so much done today, it’s insane,” I say as I shove all my notebooks and planner in my bag.
“Do you think it was the comfy shoes?”
I straighten my spine. “That’s it. I was going to wear heels tomorrow but that hurt my soul a little. I need a pair right now, actually.”
Adam chuckles, taking my bag and cups my face. His lips on mine have all the tension slowly dissipating from my body. “If it’ll make you feel better, I’d love to hear about everything you did today on the way home.”
“I’m glad to hear that, because I was going to tell you, whether you wanted to hear it or not.”
Chapter 24
Adam
I’ve made up my mind. I’m going to ask Mia to marry me. The idea of leaving for the next two weeks without us being on the same page feels unfathomable.
People on the outside looking in will most likely think it’s insane and we’re moving way too fast. But those closest to us already see the logic: Jett, my coach—hell, Mia’s dad. Not a single one of them would call us crazy. But I don’t need them to justify this choice. In my gut, it’s the right call for us.
If this really is the second chance Callie was talking about, then I’m catching mine and not letting go.
Mia rests her head on my chest as she sleeps. The more accurate description would be that she’s dead asleep. I don’t stress I’ll wake her at all as I place a kiss on her head, then roll out of her bed.
I pull the covers over her shoulder and brush her hair back from her face. I want this. I want her. Hearing her talk about all the planning she did yesterday really solidified this plan, but before I ask, I want to tell her everything.
Throwing on some sweats and a T-shirt, I check the time then head down to the lobby to wait for the deliveries I’mexpecting. I want to take back some of the control we’ve lost, and while I might not have a ring just yet, I can still put in effort to make this gesture romantic.
I’m too damn nervous to cook, so I got an assortment of muffins delivered for breakfast. Then I get well over thirty candles lit in the kitchen and living room, and find that James Taylor record we danced to.
I turn it up before making my way back upstairs. I’m a little worried I could set this place on fire with all the candles, but I’m more anxious for the words I’m about to say, so I push the thought to the back of my head.
Mia’s still asleep in the exact same position as when I left. Something tells me I’m going to have the most quality time with our baby in the morning.
Sliding back in the bed next to her, she cuddles deeper to my side and mumbles, “Good morning.”
“Morning, baby.” I kiss the top of her head, then comb my fingers softly through her hair as she slowly wakes up.
It takes about a minute before her eyes blink open. “You have the music on already?”
“Yeah, I have a surprise down there waiting for you…” Her eyes light and her mouth opens, but I keep going. “But first, I want to tell you something.”
