In the elevatorof Rebel’s condo building, Brit swiped her keycard. The door closed, the elevator started moving.

Honor stood there staring straight ahead while she combed her fingers through her hair again and again.

Adrenaline was pumping through Brit as she continued processing their arrests.

First, Liliana. Now Jordan?

Krause doesn’t collect art. He’s a drug dealer. Is he the same one Rebel’s dad had been chasing?

Honor hugged herself before whispering, “I can’t stop shaking.”

How much does she know?

The elevator door slid open. With a guiding hand, Brit brought her into the main room, dropped her coat on the sofa. Honor didn’t remove hers.

“Back in a sec.” Brit put her Glock in the home office.

When she left the room, Honor was standing in the hallway looking like a lost child. After pulling the door shut and confirming it was locked, Brit placed a comforting arm around her sister and led her back into the main room.

“It’s gonna be okay,” Brit murmured.

She poured two waters, offered one to Honor before drinking hers down. “Do you want a chamomile tea?”

Honor sipped the cold drink. “My stomach is a mess. I feel like I’m stuck in a nightmare that I can’t wake up from.”

“What can I do to help you through it?” Brit asked.

Honor choked back tears. “I’m sorry,” she muttered before crumpling on the sofa.

Brit removed her boots before easing down beside her.

“I visited my biological dad at his ranch,” Honor said. “I didn’t like seeing him, but I told him how important it was that I return to the place where my life began.”

Her rueful smile tugged at Brit’s heartstrings.

“He could have been a somewhat normal guy, if he wasn’t obsessed with the world ending.” Honor rolled her eyes. “He said I’m welcome back, so we set a date. I was so proud of myself for going there to talk to him. Then, I come back to find out my mom is a serial killer.” Pausing, she guzzled more water. “That’s terrifying to me. She killed all those women?—”

“One woman’s fiancé was also killed,” Brit added.

Honor shoulders dropped. “Oh, no. That’s so sad. You were right about Liliana. She is a terrible mom, but Jordan isn’t a bad person. He’s been my rock. Helping me navigate life, high school, even teaching me how to interact with people in ahealthy way. Do you think Liliana framed him, you know, with the drugs?”

“Why would she do that?”

“I don’t know! Why did she kill all those people?” Honor’s voice rose to a feverish pitch. “I have no idea why she does anything. Maybe she’s not as successful as she lets on, and she’s making money selling drugs.”

Brit was studying her carefully. Was she lying to protect Jordan? She couldn’t tell. After pressing her with more questions—and hearing how Jordanhadto have been framed—she decided to switch gears.

“Did you set a date at the ranch for your book party?” Brit asked.

Honor’s face brightened. “Will you be there? It would mean so much to me if you were there.” Honor placed her hands together in prayer. “Please, please say yes.”

Brit had zero interest in going.

“If I can,” Brit replied. “When is it?”

“Friday.”

“ThisFriday?”
