“Russell, you can recite your vows to Jasmine,” said the judge.
“Jazz, things happened fast for us,” Russell began. “I appreciate how committed you are to my success, how hard you work to help me achieve my dream—ourdream. I’m excited for our life in politics, in giving back to our community, and to the nation. Thank you for your loyalty.”
What the fuck was that? It sounded more like a campaign speech than a wedding vow.
Carrera squeezed Slash’s hand. She glanced up at him. He met her gaze, before she returned her attention to the bride and groom.
Russell swung his gaze over to Carrera. “Did you want to say something?”
Nothing like being put on the spot.
“Russell, take good care of my sister. Be her partner, put her first. Love her with your entire heart. Jasmine, I’m happy you found your person, someone to love, to go through life with, to share your joys, your struggles, and your challenges, knowing he’ll be there every step of the way. We wish you both the best.”
Tears rolled down Jazz’s cheeks and she whisked them away. “That was beautiful, thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” Russell replied.
Slash squeezed Carrera’s hand. They both knew Jazz was talking abouthisspeech, not Russell’s. The judge pronounced them husband and wife. They shared a chaste kiss, Russell thanked the judge, and they left his chambers.
That was the fastest, most emotionless wedding Carrera had ever witnessed.
In the hallway, Carrera suggested they come to the house for dinner. “You can share your news with G-ma.”
“That sounds great,” Jazz replied.
“You go ahead, wife.” Russell grinned. “That sounds funny. Wife.”
“You’re my husband.” Jazz furrowed her brow. “Crazy.”
“I’m gonna head back over to campaign headquarters,” Russell said. “I’ll text you later to see if you’re still there.” He gave her one quick peck before he took off.
Carrera’s heart broke for his sister.
“Congratulations,” Slash said to Jazz. “Your grandmother and dad are going to be so happy for you.”
The three walked out. As Jazz headed to her car alone, Slash said, “I can follow you if you want to ride with her.”
“I’m good, but thanks,” he replied. “I gotta ask… what the hell was that?”
“A quickie wedding,” Slash said.
“What’s the rush?”
“If he changes his name to Santini before the election, you’ll have your answer.”
“If he’s using my sister, I’ll fucking kill him,” Carrera growled.
Slash
At the house,Slash changed into a T-shirt and running shorts. Back downstairs, she spotted G-ma and Jazz talking on the porch. Carrera was at his desk in his home office.
He glanced up. “Yo, mama, where you headed?”
She poked her head in. “Downstairs to lift.”
“Need a spotter?”
“You can check on me, if you want.”
