He has to choose to let go of the power. That's the ritual. That's all it is and that's everything it is — the simplest and most impossible condition in the world, for someone surviving on that power for thirty years.

And Vaustren told me severing it would trigger the manifestation early. Which might be true, or might be exactly what an entity's servant says when the entity doesn't want you to sever its connection to its host. I can't know which one it is from here.

What I do know is that the floor of the entire capital is built on top of an abyssal chamber that has been waiting for thirty years to open.

I press my back against the wall and think about what I have to ask him to give up and whether I have the right to ask it.

Then I think about the old man with the burning lantern in Tanner's Row, and Reva's toddler eating in the warehouse, and I decide that the right to ask is a question for another time.

I go find Sevareth.

SEVARETH

The crown's formal declaration arrives on the eleventh morning after Mireya's meeting with the queen. Five days left in the window Thessira gave her, and the queen is already moving.

Sevareth Vhol'ir, High Lord of House Vhol'ir, is hereby designated a threat to the stability and sovereign integrity of the Khuzuth Empire, pending formal dissolution proceedings. All House Vhol'ir operations, contracts, and administrative authority are suspended pending review. Lord Vhol'ir is ordered to present himself before the crown's tribunal within ten days.

I read it twice, fold it, and set it on the desk with the same deliberate care I use to set down any document that requires a response I haven't decided on yet.

Draevik is watching me from the doorway.

"The harbor district is locked down," he says. "Two noble house armies are staging in the eastern approach. Royal forces are positioned at the northern gate."

"They're not moving yet."

"No. They're waiting to see if you comply with the tribunal order."

"I won't."

"I know." He comes in and closes the door. His voice drops. "My lord. The third candidate I identified for the crown's source inside this house — it was Aldrek's assistant. Not Aldrek himself. He's been feeding operational information to the coalition for three months."

Three months. While we were dismantling their financial networks and running counter-strategy from this very room.

"Handle it," I say.

"Done this morning." A pause. "There's something else. The Maw — last night, between the second and third hours, the lower levels of the estate were — " he chooses his words carefully "— affected. The household staff on night rotation are shaken. Two of them have resigned as of this morning."

I know. I was awake for it. I felt the entity pressing at the boundary of what I can contain with an urgency I haven't felt from it in years, like something is building toward an event it has been anticipating and is now impatient for.

"Increased guard rotation on all civilian staff," I say. "Effective immediately. Anyone who wants to leave the estate should be allowed to leave with full severance."

"And the defence?"

"I'll need a full tactical review in two hours."

He nods and goes. I turn back to the window and look at the city that is preparing to come for me, and I feel the Maw shift restlessly in my chest.

The document takes me three hours to draft.

It is specific and thorough and completely illegal in the technical sense that it transfers administrative control of assets that are under crown suspension order. I don't particularly care about that. What I care about is that every protection in every human district under House Vhol'ir's authority is documented in terms that survive the house's dissolution. That the legalmechanisms exist to transfer the protections to crown charter without requiring any further action from me.

I write Mireya's name into the administrative transfer at three separate points. Not because she needs my authority — she's already crown-acknowledged, Thessira saw to that — but because I want her name on the record. On something that will last.

I'm sealing the document when she walks in.

She takes one look at my face, one look at the documents on the desk, and something in her own face shifts from the focused energy she came in with to something quieter and considerably more dangerous.
