Celeste sags against me, trembling. I catch her, holding her upright, feeling her exhaustion flood into me.

I glance down at our chests. The glow is fading now, the crimson light dimming to something barely visible through the fabric. But everyone saw it. Everyone knows.

Silence.

The inner circle stares. Seven vampires and one human, all frozen in various states of shock.

"In three hundred years, I've seen several bonded pairs," Nadia says quietly, her voice stripped of its earlier hostility. "None of them had marks like that. None of them had marks that glowed."

"The color alone is unprecedented," Julian adds, still staring. "Bond marks are always black or gray. Subtle. Easy to miss unless you're looking. But those..." He shakes his head. "Those are impossible to ignore."

"They pulse together," Elena whispers from where she'semerged from under the table. "Did you see? The same rhythm. Like..."

"Like their heartbeat," Marcellus finishes. His eyes meet mine, and I see the weight of understanding there. "Add it to the list of impossible things."

Then Nadia's voice, shaken but recovering its edge: "So she's not just a sleeper agent. She's an evolving weapon. One that apparently goes off when she's emotional."

"Nadia," Marcellus growls. "Perhaps now is not the time."

"Now is exactly the time. She just destroyed half the room without even trying. What happens when she's truly angry? When she's threatened? When Konstantin activates her while she has these abilities?"

"Telekinesis." Julian is staring at the shattered glass on the wall, an expression of wonder breaking through his fear. "She moved objects with her mind. That's not a vampire ability. That's not any vampire ability I've ever documented."

"The modifications," Elena says, crawling out from under the table. "This must be what Konstantin meant. The abilities that haven't manifested yet."

"Fascinating," Dr. Sullivan breathes, fear giving way to scientific curiosity. "Absolutely fascinating. The neurological implications alone..."

"I didn't mean to." Celeste's voice is small, muffled against my chest. "I didn't even know I could."

"I know." I hold her tighter. "It's not your fault."

"How do we know it won't happen again?" Caleb asks from his corner, voice carefully neutral. "How do we contain something like this?"

"We don't contain her," I say firmly. "We help her learn to control it."

"Control it?" Nadia laughs bitterly. "She's a bomb waiting to gooff, and you want to..."

A knock at the door cuts her off.

Marcellus opens it to reveal a young vampire, one of the perimeter guards. His face is pale, his hands shaking.

"Sir. A message just arrived. From Konstantin."

The room goes still.

"Bring it," I say.

The guard enters, holding a sealed envelope like it might bite him. The seal is the same old wax as before, pressed with a symbol I recognize all too well. Konstantin's personal mark.

I take the envelope and break the seal.

Inside is a single sheet of paper. In Konstantin's elegant handwriting. Celeste moves to my side to view the letter. I don't stop her. She has a right to see this.

My dear Maximus,

Congratulations on the bond. Word travels fast when you have friends in the right places.

She's finally waking up. The modifications are activating, one by one, just as I planned. You've accelerated the timeline, actually. The bond strengthened everything I put in her blood. I should thank you for that.
