I walked out of the warehouse.

Got back in my car.

Started the engine.

And as I drove away, I felt something I hadn’t felt in years.

Control.

The alliance was dead.

Long live the new one.

I couldn’t wait to see Winston’s face when he finds out I was the one who brought his empire down.

Chapter 9

AMAI

The sun was setting over the water, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple that should have been beautiful.

I didn’t see any of it.

I sat on the back patio of the lake house, a glass of bourbon in my hand that I hadn’t touched in twenty minutes. The ice had melted. The drink was watered down and useless now.

Like me.

The thought came unbidden, sharp and vicious.

I stared at the lake. Watched the light shift across the surface. Tried to find something—anything—that would quiet the noise in my head.

It didn’t work.

Nothing worked.

Behind me, the sliding glass door opened.

I didn’t turn around.

Didn’t need to.

I knew Priest’s footsteps the way I knew my own breathing.

He walked across the patio and stopped a few feet away. Didn’t sit. Just stood there, waiting.

The silence stretched.

Finally, he spoke.

“You okay?”

I took a slow breath.

Let it out.

“I’m always okay,” I said.

Priest didn’t move. “What next?”
