I looked up at him and frowned before pointing my finger and jabbing him in the chest.

“You don’t get to sit there and judge me when I know you have as much—if not more—blood on your hands than I do.”

He pressed his lips together and scrunched his face to the side.

“Trust me, I know all about what Tray was up to and how you helped him at first.”

“I was stupid back then,” he admitted as he lowered his head in shame.“I didn’t know the depth of what Tray was involved in, and by the time I did, it was too late to just walk away.I had a mark on my back because of my association with him.I stayed for a while because it was safer to stay with the organization than it was to try to leave.”

“We’ve both made some mistakes,” I said softly as I brushed my fingers against his jaw.“But there’s nothing we can do to erase what happened in the past. All we can do is look forward and hope for a better future.”

“As long as you’re in mine, I don’t need anything else.”He leaned in and kissed my forehead, making me forget about the danger that was still waiting for us, because in that moment, nothing else mattered.

Jo was curled againstmy chest when a loud noise woke me up.I rolled her away as quickly and gently as I could, as I jumped out of bed and grabbed my gun.It took a few seconds for my brain to fully wake up as I rushed around the bedroom, making sure no one was inside with us.I cleared the bathroom, then headed for the rest of the cabin, pulling the bedroom door shut behind me.

I kept my hands steady with the gun aimed in front of me while I focused, listening for any sign that someone was there as I quickly cleared the other bedrooms and bathroom before stepping into the living room.

The front door was wide open as a gust of wind whipped through the room, sending a chill through me.I watched the door for any signs of movement while I quickly scanned the kitchen and checked around the counter to make sure no one was hiding.

Once the cabin was clear, I walked to the front door and started to push it closed when I stopped and stared at the fresh footprints in the snow.I looked up, desperate to find who it was, but the falling snow made it impossible to see anything.

I shut the door and locked it as I took a few steps back, my breath coming out heavy as my heart raced.

Someone had been there.

There was absolutely no way that they were my footprints from when I brought our stuff in earlier.Hours had passed since I had been outside, and the snow had been falling consistently since then.

“What’s wrong?”Jo asked, startling me as my head whipped around to look at her.

Before I could say anything, I spotted the red dot on her chest.I leaped in front of her as a shot rang out, piercing the silence around us as she fell to the floor.
