ell, that’s a terrifying number.”

Winston lifted a brow and peered over the edge of his book. “Oh?”

Rupert nodded at the sheet of paper on the coffee table. “Tax assessment,” he murmured.

“Ah,” Winston said.

Rupert drummed his fingers on his lip. Winston peered down at his book. Then he said, “Is your bank account zero?”

“Well. There are a few zeroes involved.”

The alpha raised his head again. Rupert smiled coyly. “But no, it’s decidedly not zero.”

“Mm,” Winston said. “Is the tax going to break you?”

“No, absolutely not.”

“And what are you going to do with the extra then?”

Rupert sighed. “I haven’t quite decided yet. I was thinking a donation to the children’s hospital.”

“Yes.”

“The cancer ward.”

“Okay.”

“And then the halfway house for omegas.”

“All right.”

Rupert sighed, leaning back and crossing his arms. “But that still doesn’t take care of it all.”

“It sounds to me like we need to reduce your income more.”

Rupert grunted. “I’ve written bonuses for Charli and Moose.”

“Mm.”

“And sent money to each of the omegas in the twins’ play group. I’ve paid the daycare.”

“Uh-huh.”

“I wired money to the family.”

Winston clapped his book shut and set it aside. He leaned forward over his knees. “All right. Perhaps you need to do more.”

“Maybe,” Rupert grumbled. “It’s just—we got rid of so much, giving it to people who need it or supporting this business or that, and then they’ve made it all back!”

“Mm.” Winston smiled cheekily. “Amazing how money comes back to you, hm?”

“We’re trying to get rid of it!” Rupert cried.

Winston chuckled. “Well,” he said, “I’m sure you’ll think of something to do.”
