“How do you feel about Thai?” Rupert asked idly.
“An interesting suggestion,” Winston said. “What about curry?”
“I don’t mind it.”
“But you don’t like it?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“Then curry is all right?”
“Yes, I suppose.”
Winston lifted his brows. “Or would you like something else?”
“It’s fine,” Rupert said. “I’ll have whatever you think is best.”
The alpha’s eyebrows went even higher. He glanced up from his screen. “I don’t want you to be agreeable,” he said, almost sternly, and Rupert shrank back.
“What?”
Winston frowned at him. “You’re being agreeable. Omegas do that sometimes, when they think they should please an alpha.”
“I’m not ‘being agreeable.’ I’m honestly fine with curry,” Rupert sniffed.
Winston held his gaze. “Are you sure?”
“Yes!” Rupert cried. “Go ahead—if that’s what you’d like, then—”
“But is it whatyou’dlike?”
Rupert scoffed and looked away. He felt Winston’s gaze on him for a long while. Finally, he turned back. “I’d rather have chicken madeira, if they have it.”
Winston smiled, almost sharply. “There, see? You were just trying to agree with me because that’s what you thought you should do.”
Rupert huffed again. Winston perched in the chair beside him. After a moment, he tucked his phone away. “If you don’t mind … did your husband like it when you agreed with him?”
Rupert stared at the alpha for a moment. “That’s rather invasive,” he grumbled.
“I’m just asking,” Winston said. “I know a lot of alphas expect that.”
Rupert flushed. “It’s in the vows.” He shot Winston a dark look. “Submit thyself, obey.”
“Mm.” Winston lifted his brows. “One reason I think marriage is outmoded.”
Rupert blinked. “Outmoded?”
Winston tilted his head. “Treating omegas like property—treating anyone like property …”
“Well,” Rupert said, staring at him. He felt like they were edging on a rather uncomfortable conversation, even though he perhaps agreed. He thought again of Thomas.
“It’s not right,” Winston mused.
“I’d say not,” Rupert agreed.
The lawyer looked at him for a long time. “At any rate, you don’t need to be obedient.”
“Are you giving me license to bedisobedient?”
