I nod. He nods with me. “In humans, everyone starts the opposite—female.”

Ah-ha. So he isan omega! Underneath all his bluster …

He shakes his head, as though sensing my thoughts. “I can’t—humans don’t change. Once we’ve developed one way, we’re stuck like that. Unless we have surgery or take drugs or stuff like that.”

I frown. “Do people do that?”

“Some people.” He nods. Here, everyone chooses. We are all the same at the start. Those who wish to become alphas work to become bigger, stronger. A beta who wishes to become an alpha will leave the territory of other alphas, start his own float, and become bigger and stronger. Those who wish to be omegas find an alpha and become the second largest, the second strongest. And some wish to remain betas, so they do not leave.

Evan makes it sound like humans have no choice. It seems rather terrible to me. How many humans are ill-suited to being alphas, but they are anyway? How many are omegas, but should really be alphas or betas? It makes little sense.

“Pinch them.” Evan’s voice is raspy, dragging me back to the present. I still have my hands on his chest.

I do as he says. He arches into my touch, his eyes falling shut. His lips part; his chest heaves.

I’m thrilled, dizzy with a sudden sense of power. He is so reactive. I can make him feel good.

He exhales, harsh and needy. “Yeah. Just like that.”

I brush my snout by his ear. “Tell me where else to touch you.” His body is similar enough to my own that I have an idea of what to do. But I want him to instruct me. I want to learn everything about my omega, so I can make him sing with pleasure later.

The idea makes my blood thunder through my veins. I can’t help but growl, and Evan shudders underneath me. He takes my wrist with his own shaking hand and guides my touch down, to the juncture of his legs. “Here,” he breathes.

His cock is not impressive. I’m not surprised—he is, first and foremost, an omega and, secondly, he is small compared to the kroakka. I can take it firmly in hand, grasping it tight. He gasps and groans and bucks into my touch.

His cock is flush like the rest of him, a deeper color than most of his skin. I pause at the sack of skin at the base of it. I’ve never seen anything like that. I glance up at him.

“My—uh—balls,” he manages. It seems like he’s having trouble thinking.

I must appear curious about why humans have a little sack of balls hanging off their dicks, because he says, “Testicles. They’re—humans get too hot, internally, so they’re outside the body.”

“Oh.” I frown again. “That seems dangerous.”

A wide grin breaks across his round face. “It is,” he assures me. “Getting sacked hurts. A lot.”

Divine or not, humans, I think, are very ridiculous creatures. Alphas have nipples they never use and they keep such precious body parts out in the open, where they can be hurt.

“You can—uh. Touch ’em.”

I peer up at the omega, then drop my gaze back down. I run a finger, claw-tip first, down the center, which appears almost like a little seam, like the gods stitched him up here.

Evan shivers. I hold one of his “balls” in my hand—I see why he used that term.

“Squeeze ’em,” he instructs, so I do, amazed by the moan that tears out of his throat. “Not too—not too much.”

I relax my grip a little. I play with them a little more—they’re very curious—and then I drop my attention lower.

I have to move his balls in their little sack out of the way to see what I’m really looking for—his cloaca, flush pink and pretty, winking at me.

Evan’s breath hitches, like he’s excited for this too.

I press a finger to him, then stop dead. I look up at him, frowning. “You do not have to pretend you’re enjoying this,” I chide.

“Huh?” The look of confusion on his face is so sweet, it almost makes my anger evaporate.

I prod his dry hole again. “You’re not excited.”

“What?” Now he seems angry. “I am so.”
