We both cringe at the sound of my dad’s voice, followed by heavy footsteps charging up the stairs. Darwin rolls his eyes toward the ceiling and clasps his hands, almost like he’s praying. “Oh dear,” he whispers.

Dad charges right into the house. “Did you find the thing you wanted help moving, or did you—”

He pauses, one hand slapped on the doorframe. He scowls at me, so I scowl back. Darwin heaves an enormous sigh, then gets back to his feet. “Actually,” he says, his voice high and tight, “I think I might have left it on the ship.”

Dad’s gaze shifts to his friend. “On the ship?” he snorts. “Really?”

“Really really,” Darwin mutters, then bustles by Dad, out the door. “Come on, Tom, no sense in bothering the boy!”

Dad glances back at me. For a split second, it looks like he wants to say something. Then his scowl returns. He shakes his head, turns, and heads back down the stairs.

I heave a huge breath, but there’s no relief. Vince’s words echo in my ears. They’re going to try to kidnap me. The question is how are they plotting to do it and when?
