I turn my head. Yafir lowers his, slumping against the wall as he does so. “He tried to warn Evan. He told Evan not to set foot on that ship. He knew what they were plotting.”
I growl in my throat. “I should not have let it happen. I should not have let Evan go.”
Yafir sighs. “He thought they might come back for him, once they realized. That by staying here, he could get them to turn around. To return.”
I furrow my brow. “And then what?”
“Then we would exchange. He’d go with them in exchange for Evan.” There are tears in Yafir’s eyes. He looks very pained by the thought that Vince would leave.
“Then why haven’t they returned yet?”
Yafir shakes his head. “I don’t know,” he murmurs. “Maybe—they haven’t noticed yet? Or perhaps … perhaps they don’t care.”
Silence reigns over us for a moment or two. Yafir blinks tears from his eyes. “I’m sorry, Sobek.”
I sneer and turn my head. “Spare your pity for someone who wants it,” I grumble. Am I really so weak that I need pity from my omega brother? Feh.
Yafir sighs; it’s a weighty noise, full of unspoken sorrow and regretted words, but he says nothing.
Then, there’s a cheer and a whoop, and the next thing we know, Vince has rushed into the room, wearing the widestsmile I’ve ever seen. “They’re coming back,” he says, almost gleefully. “And I think they’re going to have to land.”
