Scott’s breathing is labored. “Just—just before we landed. Min shot at me, they got on the shuttle and—and … took off.”

Darwin glances at me, then back down at the injured sun spirit. “So, what you’re saying is they escaped. They left before the ship crashed.”

Scott closes his eye and settles. “Yeah,” he agrees.

“Evan wasn’t on board when the ship crashed,” Darwin says, and Scott nods, then crumples up in agony. Darwin glances around, holding out a hand to the injured sun spirit. “Here—hold still. I’ll get you some water. Water?! Excuse me!”

I cannot move, the news that Evan wasn’t even on the ship when it landed sinking deep into my bones.

My mate is still alive.
