“In six weeks, we move into your apartment, but until then, we live in my house.”
She laughs, tossing her head back and pulling my attention to her neck. My mouth has been all over that, yet I barely remember it.
“You do realize that you just offered an option that gives you what you want.”
“Sure, but if you don’t enjoy living with me six weeks from now, you can move into your own apartment without me, and we move forward living separately.”
She sits up straighter and narrows her eyes. “Six weeks?”
“Six weeks.”
“Starting when?”
“Tomorrow. I don’t have class on Mondays. Let’s go get your stuff.”
She bites her thumbnail as she studies me.
“Six weeks . . . you promise?”
“I promise.”
“I’ll have my things ready in the morning.”
Holy shit. She agreed. She really agreed.
We are going to make this work. I just know it.
Sydney
“It’s a total genius idea,” I say and sit on the couch, hugging a pillow to my chest. “I just have to make it six weeks and then everything will fall into place, and I won’t have to worry about whether or not I’m trying enough with Mark.”
“You think it’ll be that easy?”
“Oh, yeah,how could it not?”
“Um, because you two clearly are attracted to each other. This screams bad idea to me.”
I shake my head. “June, seriously, I’m not attracted to Mark. We played one bad game of beer pong with fireball shots, that’s all.”
“Don’t say that’s all.” She nudges me. “He got you pregnant, Syd, and you know what they say. A drunk man’s choices are a sober man’s dreams.”
“Um, I don’t think anyone says that.”
“Well, they say something pretty darn close.”
I wave a hand between us.
“It gets me out of your place sooner than planned.”
“I don’t want you out of my place sooner than planned.”
I sigh. “He won’t stop till l do this.”
“So, you’re giving in to what he wants?”
“No.” I think over my words carefully. “I don’t think he’s completely right, but he did make some good points.”
I don’t mention that his good points were in the areas about after the baby is born, not right now. Although, when I think about it, the two of us living together now and working out any kinks is a good plan. At the same time, if we hate it, at least we aren’t learning that and how to handle a newborn at the same time. This is a good idea.
